I am black. And I am not a fan of most black music. My favorite band is The Talking Heads. My parents worry about me (really). I think some rap music is good, but the kind that is on the radio and pours out of the kids on the buses headphones, is not. Thank You. OK, just to clarify, I was addressing the people who have stated that Rap, R&B, and Hip-hop are not real music at all.....I don't think you ever said that, Chemical, did you? If you think some rap music is good, then you are not one of the people I was aiming at. Hell, even if someone hates all rap, hip-hop and R&B music, fine, just don't say that it isn't music at all. That dehumanizes these art forms invented and embraced by many young black people. And I'm not saying that people of other races don't embrace this music, just that it is characterized as a part of black culture. By the way, I love the Talking Heads.

Yeah, I said rap wasn't music, allow me to clarify. It is music by the Music Appreciation definition that it is organized sound. I like some rap. Old stuff mostly, back when it meant something. It's not just for black kids or adults, hell, I see more goofy white people riding around listening to it than black people. It does dominate every facet of media nowadays that probably leads to my hate of it. I mean, I listen to Kurtis Blow, NWA, Sugarhill Gang, etc. Of course, that's back before every song was about, "how many ho's can I pimp on", or, "this is how much money I spend on myself in a week", or, "this is how crunk I get at the club every night". That's just stupid. But, people love it. Why?
The world may never know, Jeez, I'm just pissing you all off today ain't I?

BTW, I can play Psycho Killer on the guitar.

This is my position: I don't think a black person would crap all over his or her own culture by stating that rap, R&B, and/or hip-hop is not real music. And throw in reggae, too. Therefore, I'm guessing that Ator, TS69, hopesfall, emperorcupcake, and BobJohnson are not black. Am I right or wrong?
I'm not black, BTW. I just thought I should point out that those statements belittle the music of a large part of black culture. And no one has really stood up to it here.

I don't know if there's an absolute definition of music but Winton Marsalis defined it as rhythm , harmony and melody. Rap certainly has rhythm but often the harmony and melody are sampled. I'm not saying I take an definite position on this but when it comes to music the opinion of a Marsalis is good enough for me.

I don't know why but it seems people insult my tastes in rock music because they say it's too mainstream. I mean I love artists like Evanescence and Linkin Park.

I don't know why but it seems people insult my tastes in rock music because they say it's too mainstream. I mean I love artists like Evanescence and Linkin Park. Those two are great artist, they've got powerful voices, and everytime I hear their music, no matter how many times, I still just have to stop everything and listen. What bugs me about most mainstream music today, (and I say most, not all of them) is that they're made to appeal to the listeners, the artist doesn't really care about the lyrics, it doesn't have any meaning to them. Ones like Christina Agulaira, Evenesence, Linkin Park, it seems to me that when they sing, they actually care what they're saying, trying to get something accros of how they where feeling or what they're trying to say. To me this is real music, I love that type. Others are good if they've got music good with them. I don't like most types of rap. Well the main stream stuff of like Ludacris, that have one topic.... other ones, like Outcast are good because they don't sound like, dogs in heat. that's just my opinion, don't bite my head off, I'm not trying to insult someones culture. it's just my tastes

Well, I think 80's punk is better than 90's punk too. The Dead Milkmen were Da bomb! I've found myself also liking a wide-variety of music, as long as the artists are talented. I like Punk, They Might Be Giants, the Old 97's, and Lush (although I like Lush mostly because Miki and Emma are super hot!) I fail to see the socially redeeming value of deathmetal.

I can't stand classic rock. I know the roots of all music I hold dear can be found in classic rock, but I am not at all amused by bands like Led Zeppelin. It's not that I hate this type of music like I do R & B and hip hop, but I find it boring and unmoving.

I have little use for the radio definition of "classic rock." For me classic rock is Neil Young, Bob Dylan, The Band, The Who, The Rolling Stones.... But not just the limited selection of songs that radio will play. I got sick of radio in the early 80's. I had a Zeppelin phase in the 70's but radio burned me out on them in the 80's. A lot of people my age (pushin' 50) have given up on rock or are settled into the classic rock radio format. I can't take Journey, Styx, Foreigner, Bob Sieger, Boston, Rush (sorry Servo) or most of what "classic rock" radio plays. I didn't like it when it was current and I don't like it now.

So today I heard a version of "Burning Down The House" sung by Tom Jones. That's right, the Vegas yeller/crooner who has some secret power that makes 50 year old ladies throw their panties at him. Eew.
Anyway, I thought it was pretty good.
Oh, who am I kidding- I thought it rocked!
Am I uncool?
Don't answer that. #nosmileys

Well, I can at least respect your opinion because you are being honest. I understand how one could hate classic rock considering how overplayed it is everywhere. But, at least understand that it is the foundation for most music nowadays. Then we'll get along. Some new music is good. Some of it is rap. But, it's good, you can get a groove on to it. And when you pull the women like I do, that's a good thing, BOOTY SHAKING TO THE EXTREME!!! Servo
