When I started playing guitar a guy told me it's a percussion instrument. It really does have strings though.

You did read the previous post right? He brought it up. And guitar can be very percussive. I've heard musicians refer to the piano as a percussive instrument.

Pianos are percussion instruments due to the fact it involves one inanimate piece hitting a string through weird manners. Guitars are strings, just like a cello, viola, etc. due to the fact the strings are exposed. Hell, a snare drum has rattlers, which are basically strings on the bottom, but, I'm not calling it a string instrument. Let's have instrumental harmony, next you'll be telling me a sax is a percussion instrument, Servo

For something to be percussive it doesn't have to be through weird manners. Hitting a bongo drum with your hand is percussive. I play guitar very percussive. I don't just gently strum the strings, I often use my fingers and the pick and thump out a rythym. You need to be more open minded Servo, like me!

You could quite possibly be right, but, as one who has made a living playing, managing, and promoting music and musicians and instruments, I just can't move instruments from their designated families. I have an educated insight into it, and, I'm open minded, I'm just not keen on trying to change facts.
That's all, no need for argument,

guitars are played by use of apick, or even one's hand. one has to stike the string in a certain way. that is how a guitar was created.....though you may be cool and use a bow like Jimmy Page, though he is technically playing the guitar incorrectly. So, since the instrument was intended to be plucked, strumemd, in essence, HIT, it is a percussion instrument, very similar to a piano.
now, take a violin, a cello, a bass fiddle. All have bows, and are bowed in such a manner. Not percussion. Those cool jazz guys on the upright bass who put their bows aside, are merely playing it pizzicato.
reed instruments are....well wind instruments. however, the noise a reed instrument makes is the piece of wood (reed) vibrating.....so this could possibly be seen as percussion.
Its nothing serious. So a guitar is percussion, big deal. you know, bass drums and guitar are formally part of the "rythmn section" and look at how many bands are all rythmn?

Thanks radagast. Servo just likes to argue with whatever I say. I'm a victim of circumstance.

Violens and other strings, are often played by plucking, you might also want to note that the harp, that can only be played by plucking is considered a string. I would clasify Pianos as being stuck because that's what's done, they are hit with a hammer. You don't really hit a guitar string like a hammer would? plucking and striking are two entirely different things, I agree with Servo in this arguement

Oh, I love "Your Song", and "Piano Man" is pretty good (except for that one line about the microphone smelling like a beer. What is that about?)
Unpopular musical opinions, well, for this thread:
1. Rap IS music. The main vocalist doesn't have to *sing* for it to qualify as music. Organized sound and silence. That is music. Anything that is rhythm-based is music.
2. Bob Dylan is great. Hey, Phantom!
3. Pop music is not inherently evil. There's more than one way to create art. Sometimes a group or artist is popular for a good reason. It's rare, but it happens. Pop artists celebrated for good reason: Prince, Outkast, Mary J. Blige.
4. Christina Aguilera is a talented singer.
5. The people who have won "American Idol" are talented singers, and are much different from pre-packaged pop stars like Hillary Duff (Yuck!)
Ahh, "Day in the Life" is playing on the radio right now. I don't get to hear the Beatles enough. (That's not part of my unpopular opinion list).
6. The music invented and performed mostly by young black people today IS real music (i.e. hip-hop, R&B, rap). Several people have stated the opposite opinion. I don't think it's a stretch to assume that none of them are black, is it?
7. Rush and Yes are just okay. And Phish is overrated.#nosmileys

I am black. And I am not a fan of most black music. My favorite band is The Talking Heads. My parents worry about me (really). I think some rap music is good, but the kind that is on the radio and pours out of the kids on the buses headphones, is not.
Thank You.

Thanks radagast. Servo just likes to argue with whatever I say. I'm a victim of circumstance. Not everything, just the stupid things. Like guitars being percussion. Very rarely have I seen a band, of any sort, with the guitars and drums in a section. Maybe they're all wrong. But, I kid Phantom. Servo
