In honor of Metallica releasing their best album in over 20 years I gonna give them an album ranking thread of sorts...I'm sure there aren't too many people here that care but for those who appreciate metal and can differentiate between good and bad metal join me in celebrating Metallica's history
rankings on a scale of 1 to 10
1.Master Of Puppets(1986)- 10/10
Metallica released two perfect albums. This is one of them. The only reason this gets the #1 spot is because it was the first one I heard and what made me go nuts for them. The flow of the album is also slightly better than RTL but I could be biased.
2. Ride The Lightning(1984)-10/10
Another amazing Metallica album. It contains their best song ever (Fade To Black) Like Puppets, excellent riffage, jaw dropping dynamics. I've listened to these two albums 100s of times. They never get old. Still Timeless.
3.Kill 'Em All(1983)-9/10
The only flaws in this album to me are that the production is a little sloppy...but that raw sound is what some others love and it's why it's some people's favorite Metallica album. Some of the lyrics are a little childish but you can't deny Seek & Destroy, The Four Horseman etc....these are some of their classic songs
4. Death Magnetic(2008)-9/10
Wow...amazing. Metallica is back in a big way. Robert Trujillio looks like he might be the missing ingredient. Although St. Anger showed promise, this album fulfills that promise. They are back to their roots with the rifforama and more genuine vocals from James. Instead of the tough guy/too cool to care delivery that he has exhibited in the past 20 years. And Kirk became a beast on this album...his best leads ever! However Suicide & Redemption is not up to snuff with their other classic instrumentals and there needs to be a moratorium on Metallica songs called The Unforgiven...also not wild about the title of the album.
5. ...And Justice For All(1988)-8/10
This album is very good. And any compliments I can pay it have already been mentioned. The main problem is the bass is barely audible...was this conscious or sub-conscious? Jason Newstead is a good enough bassist but nowhere in Cliff Burton's league(few are). Still that's not any reason to make a mockery of him by hiding him way in the mix...in retrospect it was a very telling decision.
6. St. Anger(2003)-7/10
After over a decade of floundering, Metallica decided to put their hearts in it. This album seems to be less concerned with following trends and/or making their music more accessible. There are a lot of shining moments in this album that point to what would be their eventual return to form in Death Magnetic. But some of it is kind of awkward too...Kirk's singing is kind of off putting and Lars' drum sound is a little too Korny. The recovery lyrics also are kind of cringeworthy. But overall it's a very solid album and I can overlook it's flaws.
7. Metallica(1991)-5/10
To me this album is the bane of metal's existence. Metallica team up with Bob Rock and decide to commercialize true metal. Gone was the extended riffing and James singing is way too contrived. The above average songs save this album from being a complete artistic failure. A passable listen by why bother when their other albums are so much better.
8.Load(1996)-3/10
Metallica try to convince everyone they aren't a metal band. Until It Sleeps is pretty much the only song on this album I would touch with a ten-foot pole.
9. Reload(1997)-1/10
other equatable experiences: Eating Warmed Over Crap, Watching Your Best Friend Be Mounted By A Wild Horse, Chinese Water Torture, Pulling Your Wisdom Teeth Out By Yourself, Lighting Your Genitals On Fire...I think I'll pass
So that's my opinion...what's yours?
