You beat me to it! I just read this on the CT blog.
I will refrain from any futher comment as my comments haven't gone over very well here, lately. I have my opinion of this movie choice as well, but I'll just wait and see what others have to say.

Of all the possible Christmas movies ever made, I would have ranked this 2nd least likely. But that's okay, I'll still watch it.

Eh, to me this is kind of a bummer, cuz this movie is already a great MST3K episode. I can see how some people may get excited about the fact they are in a way redoing it, but personally I'd much prefer to get new content. That's my opinion. Although, on the other hand, now we'll have the opportunity to directly compre CT with MST3K for the first time, to get a sense of just how good the new is compared to the old. And because of that, CT really needs to do a darn good job on this one! They gotta pull out all the stops to show us they've got it now just as much as they had it back then. And there is one other good thing - this is actually a watchable cheesy movie, unlike most of what CT has done so far. Many other people have made similar comments in these forums about the nearly unwatchable nature of some of CT's movie choices, so at least with this movie it'll be more enjoyable right off the bat. I'm glad they're not redoing 521 Santa Claus, cuz that one is already a pure classic as far as mst episodes go. SCCtM isn't quite as funny, so it's a slightly better choice. But again I have say, this is already a great MST3K episode, and there's no need to reinvent the wheel. Van Gogh only painted Starry Night once! (Now watch I'll find out I'm totally wrong and he actually attempted that painting multiple times But you get the idea!)

I must admit, the MST3K version is very difficult for me to get through, but for some reason I'm really excited by this! I think it will really be a cool experiment to see how they tackle it so many years later. I have high hopes for it! :-D

Ya know, by making a post where you say that you’re not going to say anything it kind of reveals what you were going to say. Might as well just say it. As for me, I’m pretty shocked and I wonder how, even with all new riffs, they can live up to the MST version of SCTM. I’ll certainly give it a shot but I’m a little concerned. And more than a little curious. So what I’m saying is that I’ll reserve judgment until I see it, but this seems strange to me.

My first was response was less-than-thrilled. And I've been very pleased--increasingly pleased, even--with everything CT has done. I was really hoping for something new.
After actually reading Joel's blog, I'm more okay with it. I like that they're treating it as an experiment of sorts--it reminds me of when a band plays a concert of a classic album years after its release.
I won't be super-excited to see this, and I'd rather have a third, entirely different Christmas riffing to watch with MST's SCCtM, and SC, but I'll go with it--after 4 increasingly solid episodes, Joel and Co. have earned the right to do something a little less expected.

After my initial surprise I'm kind of excited about this. Kind of. I'll enjoy hearing Frank's And Mary Jo's takes on it.
It also opens the door to MANY potential MST references, and I always like when they do that.

Wow This might be the first CT release I skip. Though I'm sure it'll be funny, but jeez, can't they leave a classic alone? If you want to revisit a movie, pick one from season 1 or KTMA that didn't probably did get the best treatment, not one from an episode that you'll never hope to top. What's next, Rifftrax releasing A Date With Your Family as an on-demand short?

I would like to know what you have to say. This is a forum after all. Well, it looks like it's about what everyone else had to say. I'm one of those who haven't loved CT's movie selection up till now, and was hoping that the Xmas one would be a non-creepy, non-sleazy movie. I've gotta say, I was pretty shocked when it was that kind of movie--it was just like a movie they would do on MST3K. Wait, it IS a movie they did on MST3K! I like the MST3K version. I don't want to watch a version that isn't sandwiched between deliciously fun and funny MST3K Xmas host segments, new riffs or not. Also, I know a lot of you watch MST3Ks and RiffTrax and CTs over and over. I'm not one of those kind of guys. Both of the Xmas MST3Ks are in my fav list, and I've seen SCCtM about 4 or 5 times now, which is a lot for me. From a business standpoint, MHO is that this is a bad idea. If I was CT, I would not have done it. Very little good can come from it. People could see it as "double dipping," it pushes more people into comparing CT to MST3K. Plus, I (still in CT shoes mode) wouldn't want to do it--I wouldn't want to riff the same movie twice. Honestly, I don't get it. As others have said, I'm sure that there are other PD and/or cheap-license Xmas movies out there.

Maybe not, but they re-did Plan 9, didn't they? Mike Nelson had a solo commentary track on the colorized Legend film release (which I have and it is pretty funny). More recently the whole RiffTrax gang released and official RiffTrax for Plan 9. So, not CT, and not quite the same. Even in that circumstance though, I felt a little jipped. I had paid $20 or something like that for the Plan 9 on disc, and then a "better" riff came out a year or two later. I may even have gotten ahold of the version with the full RiffTrax track through certain means which we won't discuss here, and didn't feel a lick of guilt over it.
