Seriously. I walk past a television at work playing this movie every day, and no matter what scene it's on, I always say to myself "That's RiffTrax fuel."
If they do this movie, I will buy it and shamelessly display it on my shelf for all to see. Hell, I will buy the first two as well, should the situation lead to a Trax on all three.
I don't care if there are two cuts of the film or not. If this movie is not done, I will be sorely disappointed in our boys.

I think it's a good idea, but I don't know how feasible it is to riff over music in a musical. I mean, obviously MST has done movies that featured music in them, but it's usually one or two songs rather than an entire movie full of them, and a lot of the songs don't really have anything to do with the story. In the case of musicals, part of the actual storytelling takes place in the song, so trying to riff over that might break their "don't talk over the dialogue too much" rule.
It would certainly be interesting to see. Those films definitely have it coming.

On the other hand, I wouldn't want to do that to the boys. Some lines should not be crossed.

I'm gonna go with part of Queen S's answer here. As stupid as the films look, I just don't think musicals should be done. There have been some great riffs over songs in the past, but in general, singing just doesn't seem to provide good fodder for riffs like dialogue does. It could work for a song or two, but not for a real musical, in my opinion.
Edit: I guess we just disagree, I didn't particularly like Catalina Caper for its music riffing. Don't recall seeing Untamed Youth. vvv

Considering Untamed Youth was a highlight of season 1 and the best parts of Catilina Caper were the musical moments, I think the entire argument of musical not being riffable is moot. The absurd dance choreography is enough to keep them fired throughout it, and the goofball teen drama will just be a bonus.
I don't see any reason why they shouldn't.

I don't think it fits the mold, really. Not in that it's a musical, because they've certainly demonstrated that musical numbers can be riffed on (TISCWSLABMUZ) but rather because the movie itself doesn't quite fit. While they've certainly taken on some genuinely lame movies in the past (Cocktail, etc.) they rarely venture into the category of "movies I wouldn't be caught dead watching" (with the possible exception of "Glitter") Most of the movies they do are titles that one might likely already have in their collection, or at least be willing to rent. But unless you've got 'tweens living at home, it would be tough to bite the bullet and add "High School Musical" to your Netflix queue.
Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt they could give it a well-deserved drubbing, I just don't see it in the cards. Might be a good experiment to have them take on one of the musical numbers as a "short" first, and see how it goes from there.
*edit* Hehe, this thread just triggered a "High School Musical 4: Now Casting" advertisement on the forums here. D'oh!

That's one thing I thought Joel did better than Mike on MST3k. Joel possessed the right kind of silliness to counter the mawkishness or stupidity of musical numbers in movies like The Giant Gila Monster or Daddy-O. To me Mike could never really pull it off, which is okay with me because I can do without musical numbers altogether. So, I would agree with the others here who've said it's a no-go for Rifftrax.

...*edit* Hehe, this thread just triggered a "High School Musical 4: Now Casting" advertisement on the forums here. D'oh! I just applied online! Sky, as lovely as your singing voice is, I don't think they give too many singing roles to the grownups in these films. If I'm not mistaken. I suppose you could play the substitute teacher or the held-back-WAY-too-long kid or the janitor or something, though. Hey, maybe you could work certain lyrics from "The Janitor Song" into your routine somehow! At any rate, yeah, if the Rifftrax boys were to tackle this one (ideally I'd like them to go after the first movie), I'd be one of the first in line to get it, no doubt. This type of stuff definitely has it coming. If nothing else, though, I'm strongly considering it for my own future iRiff projects, just to see if it truly CAN be done.

Oh man. I don't know about this. I actually do think a RiffTrax of a musical is possible, especially as the RiffTrax crew is a musical bunch, but I have had to sit through HS Musical turds many, many times because I love my niece, even though she has horrific taste in film. I just don't think I could do it again, even with a RiffTrax commentary.
