The former Sex Pistol John Lydon is currently taking part in the UK's most popular primetime reality show. Yesterday, on live tv, he told its 12 million viewers that they were f***ing c**ts.
Not very pleasant, but the total number of complaints received by ITV has been less than 80. The tabloids are full of it today and everyone thinks it's a big laugh. Good old Johnny and all that.
Yet Janet Jackson's brief flash at the Superbowl seems to have plunged American tv into crisis, with words such as 'disastrous' and 'debacle' being used and CBS being hammered from every angle by its 'shocked' viewers. Now we read that the Oscars may be broadcast on a five-second delay because ABC are concerned that another incident of boob-flashing might lead to anarchy in the streets.
Could this be the end of genuinely live tv in the US ? How can CBS and ABC feel under such intense pressure ? I know that the Superbowl is a huge family occasion but surely Ms Jackson's faux-pas isn't the worst thing to have been seen or heard on US tv this week.
When it comes to family viewing, which is worse - a brief topless shot or a volley of abusive language ? And is censorship of the networks really as prevalent in the US as it appears from over here.

Being employed by the TV industry here, I can answer this with a resounding yes. I don't believe that the majority of Americans really care that much about one momentary flash of a mostly-exposed boob.
However, everyone in the TV industry is so fearful of losing their job over something like this that no one ever takes chances. For this to happen in as national a venue as the Super Bowl is unique and intriguing from an industry perspective, but unfortunately it can only have negative repercussions for freedom of speech in this country while a GOP flunkie is in charge of the FCC.

The Janet Jackson "boobie" incident was all part of MTV's new "gimmick". Remember Britney and Madonna's toungue action? It's all about "shock". And don't give me any crap about MTV and CBS at each other's throat because of this, They are owned by the same company.

I did not see it as a big deal. John Lydon was worst, and not even all that bad. Why Janet Jackson does not shock my head. 1. It would have been fine in Europe. 2. The part they block on TV was covered by that nipple ring thingie. 3. We have all seen a breast, I am thinking, no matter how old or young you are. And people are trying to protect their children from all these things, but they are not really doing it at all, with MTV and stuff. And it is not really bad. I go with the Europeans, as noted before: It is part of your body. I hope you see it in your life, because not doing so means that you do not take a shower often.

I found Justin Timberlake's description of the event a little amusing.
He called it a "wardrobe malfunction".
Isn't that kinda like when you get yourself stuck in your zipper?

"wardrobe malfunction" hmmm that could apply to a lot of MST characters and monsters, I'd say...
What is America's nipple problem anyway?
I lived for years in Europe and nipples were exposed in the afternoon (on tv, he pertly added) and yet their children seem a lot less prone to violence than we are...hmmmmm
People are regularly mutilated, shot, insulted, cursed, etc. on American tv...but a nipple. It's gonna f--- up my children. hmmmm
Counseling anyone?

face it, Americans are more easily "shocked" than any other group of people in the history of the earth. are at least they are told to be shocked. as for me, I was too drunk at the time to rememebr seeing any nipple plate of ring.....though later on a buddy of mine showed be photos he found ont he net, godbless his soul! in fact, I was drunk during most of the Superbowl, having quaffed 4 shots of Absolut and Sprite. And when I first saw Justin whatever-lake first come one, I just took the bottle and downed that sucker. Granted I dont normally drink like this, so I had no problems with it. In fact, I couldn't tell you one single Superbowl commercial, since I was either eating, drinking, or helping my other buddy with his iPod. so Jackson vs. Lydon...? As much as I love the antics of Lydon, Jackson would win. She has Michael on her side, the living work of art....

Or were you drinking, Radegast, Radagast? That's a Czech beer, you know. Or is your handle merely a reference to the pagan god? Enquiring minds want to know...

Man, let me get to the point, as, right now, I'm sloshed. The Lake (as I will refer to Justin Timberlake as from now on) and that washed up Jackson are weak. I mean, you need some albums to sell bad enough that you're going to corrupt one thing that you know most people will be watching? It's not that I have any problem with nudity or whatever, hell, I encourage it. But to do some garbage like that just for the "shock value", that's weak as hell. Get a life, make good music so people will buy it on there own, and, well, make music for the sake of making music. That's all there is. What the Lake and Jackson did was retarded.
Just one man's thought,
Servo

It was an accident. With all that has been going on with Jacko (who is wacko), she wouldn't be stupid enough for it to just happen like that. Maybe she is, but it doesnt really matter. What pisses me off is that its a race issue. If Spears did that, sure there would be some controversey, but she wouldn't be banned from the grammies. She would of put out an apology and everyone would treat it like whn she frenched madonna. But because Janet is black and a jackson, they show the clip like no tomorrow all over the news. The Daily Show made a good point, if you don't want your kids to see it, then why do they keep on showing it on primetime? Its a meat factory. Justin performed at the grammies, I didn't watch it, but he should been guilty be association, but then again he is a white boy. This stuff just makes me sick. Its just a boob, kids suck on these for nurishment and there was no one or thing licking them or doing anything overtly sexual (except for Just grabbing it). Now if it was something shown down south, then I might be able to understand why everyone is upset. I just wish this puritan country would grow up.
I'm very white btw.

I wasn't shocked, just confused when I saw it. Unfortunately, us Americans grip on to our puritan ways as we still can, but not by much. I would rather live in Britain or Canada because they are more "relaxed" to a degree (except that David Blaine thing which they were using him as a target for hatred against Americans)

look, we were low on drinks. I could have just done straight shots....but I wasn't into getting drunk fast.
and I have never drank absinthe though I would love to try it.
and "radagast" is a reference the Radagast the Brown from Lord of the Rings, for those curious.
