Okay, so, a few months back I went to a party and was told that we'd play a game called Munchkin. I'd heard of Munchkin and looked forward to trying it.
And honestly? This is the first time where I've been introduced to a game of some sort and dedicated the next day to a shopping trip just so that I can buy my own copy of the game.
Now, the problem is that I can never find anyone to play it with me. :-P
Still, though, I loved this game. And I'm intrigued by some of the other versions of it, and the expansion decks. If I were to pick up an expansion deck, might anyone have a suggestion for which one to get?

I've been dying to try it. Most of the expansions sound like a lot of fun. I heard they finally put out some sort of expansion deck that lets you blend (ah, upon my research I have discovered it is in fact called Munchkin Blender) the different versions, so that might be a good pick-up item for you.
StarMunchkin, SuperMunchkin, Munchkin Bites, and Munchkin Cthulu are particularly intriguing to me. There are also pirate (that would be good for you, sir!), ninja, spy, and western versions, plus all of the expansions built off of those and the original itself.
It does appear the creators learned a lesson or two from Pokemon.

It's lots of fun. We used to play it in college all the time, me and my buddies. I have Munchkin Cuthulu, but like Affy, I can never find anyone to play it with me. You really need a group of people who are really into it. I'm thinking about getting both of the extensions (The Call of Cowthulu and The Unspeakable Vault). It's my favorite of the set, but Super Munchkin and Star Munchkin are also awesome. I wish I could find more people to play, but on the upside, it does give me an excuse to hang onto my more-than-six-sided dice. Easier to track levels that way. One of the coolest features in Munchkin comes from the instruction manual. If you can get away with cheating, it's legal. There's also a version called Munchkin Bites, which is sorta like an underworld-style game (I know it's based off of another Roleplaying Game... but I don't know what it is.) Oh, and Affy, do you have just plain old Munchkin? Because Clerical Error and Need for Steed are both awesome expansions. The one with the Orcs is also a decent expansion. EDIT: For those curious, here's the link to the official site.

I played it a couple of times. Definitely an insider's game, but plenty of good laughs.

I have the space set, I bought as a present for someone. I decided not to use it that time for some reason I've forgotten. I need to get it out and find some players.

It is unfortunate that it is a card game, or we would all play together. Affy, try checking the Munchkin message boards and/or local comic stores for games in your area.

Actuall a cool, non-pressure online game like that would be awesome if we could find one. Kingdom of Loathing is fun, but it's not *really* multiplayer.

Yeah. Online multiplayer would be tricky (though I'm convinced it could be worked out in some format.)
And DQ, yeah, I've just got the original basic game. Haven't decided about the other sets yet (I figure that I should at least play the game a few times before I decide if I want to drop 10/20 bucks on an expansion that might not get used.)

I hear you, Affy. I'm glad that the Munchkin Cuthulu expansions are a little cheaper than most other expansions (less cards...), but, like you, I don't know if I'd waste my time buying something that's not going to be used very often.
Clerical Error has a card in it that lets you win the game if you're a cleric (I think... I'm not sure, the Original Munchkin deck I used to play belonged to a friend of mine, and he had money out the wazoo, so he had all the expansions).
I really liked Star Munchkin, if only for being the cyborgs, who cannot die.

A massive band of MSTies let lose in some referency adventure? I dig it. My problem is that I love the quest aspects of games but just get bored silly with combat. But most of the non-combat online games are twice as silly.

I took that Star Munchkin set home over the weekend and played a dozen games with my brother and sisters. It's a lot of fun, and the only real complaint I have is that I think you really need a couple sets of cards to have more variety. I'd love to get the Star Munchkin 2 set that's advertised on my box.
We also changed a couple rules to make it slightly harder, because at times (particularly by sacrificing your sidekicks) we were pretty much shrugging off any attacks by monsters or other players.

I think some of the old-school text based MUDs are where we would have thrived.

I have that one in my deck, and all I have is the basic edition of the game.

Hmmm... could be. Like I said, it's been a while since I have played the basic set. I think Clerics can win through that card, though... or something...
