Man, Rod was that cool. He was probably one of the damn smoothest people ever to grace a TV screen. The Zone is my second fav show, next to MST3K. It'll creep you out, make you laugh, whatever you like. And all the famous people who appeared on there. It's endless!!!
"Your moving into another dimension......."
Rock!!!

Serling was happenin'. Most of the Zones were morality tales. He was always trying to point out hypocraties in society and expose racism. He could get away with a lot more working in fantasy. You couldn't talk about a lot of stuff outright in those days.

You couldn't talk about a lot of stuff outright in those days. Very true. Most episodes were like that. I actually have the episode guide and just reading it rules. He was definitely ahead of his time and a lot of the morals and values presented in the shows still ring true today. A great writer, a great visionary, Servo

We did a Twilight Zone thing for English a while back. 'Twas only the script, and it was the script for "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street". After we were done with it, we got to watch the actual episode, and I riffed it. Sorry, but some girls behind me were laughing at my jokes. I need to support my audience.

Twilight Zone is great! I'm not a science fiction fan by any means, I don't like Star Trek, X-Files, or any of that stuff, but Twilight Zone is different. Twilight Zone isn't as much about the sci fi as it is about the story, and the moral/twist at the end.
My favorite one is "Time Enough At Last". Don't you feel sorry for that poor guy at the end? It seemed cruel to do that to the guy. Usually they only do that to the bad guys.

Zone was done on a low budget and little or no special effects.. It was all about the story and characters. I've seen them in syndication but I have such strong memories from my childhood. I'd get all freaked out by an episode and have to draw pictures about it before I could sleep. I blame (credit) Twilight Zone for much of my unconventional ways and quirks.

Roger that, Phantom, though I'm not quite old enough to have caught on it's first run, I was fascinated by whatever episodes I could see, mostly at my friend's house 'cause he had cable and my family didn't!
Also, I remember the 80's re-make of the show, complete with theme music by The Grateful Dead;D
There was also a TZ magazine, it helped me stave off boredom many times in my youth-chock full of what I thought at the time were some of the coolest stories-
wow-I haven't thought of that in years-
Great thread, Phantom!

Also, I remember the 80's re-make of the show, complete with theme music by The Grateful Dead;D The 80's version was OK. Not the equal of the original but I watched it and thought it wasn't a waist of time. Several were really quite good. But the Serling show was really quite special. Even he didn't fully recognize it. At some point he sold off the rights to the network not realizing the potential of syndication. Maybe not a businessman but Rod Serling is something of a personal hero to me. TZ would be enough but he did a lot before that. He wanted television to be a place for originality and quality writing but he was always fighting the system. Yes, despite those who look at 50's TV with rose colored (B&W) glasses it wasn't all wholesomeness and goodness.

I always like Tales from the Crypt more. It was funnier and more entertianing. And it had Penn and Jillete.
