I agree that KING KONG is quite a chore to watch...and it was just as much a chore to riff on it, although I think we did a pretty good job under the circumstances.
I had contacted RiffTrax last year about the problems I was having uploading the other two GAMERA iRiffs, and I also asked several people on the message boards for advice, but nothing worked. I sent copies of the films on disc to RiffTrax so they could see what the problem was, but they never got around to looking at them before they revamped the website and moved it to a larger server. I was told that, once the move was made, that the iRiff section would be improved and I shouldn't have any more problems. It's taken them six months to get the iRiff section up-and-running again, but I still can't upload the other two GAMERA riffs. Someone on the message boards told me that they aren't completely finished yet, so you can only upload MP3 files, not VOD. So, I continue to wait, but I somehow doubt that I will ever get those movies uploaded on the RiffTrax website. Of course, we sold so few copies of GAMERA SUPER MONSTER (perhaps in part due to the Riff section being down for so long) that I have to question if it's worth the trouble.
I wasn't aware that Daiei went out of business. When did this happen?
The reason you see so few DVD-Rs on eBay is because they tend to automatically assume that DVD-R=illegal bootleg and shut down every auction that says "DVD-R" "Region 0" "Out of Print" or "Public Domain". As someone who sells Public Domain films on DVD-R, I've had my share of problems with eBay. They once told me that, as far as they were concerned, "there is no such thing as 'Public Domain'." Amazon seems to have a lot of DVD-R videos on their website, mostly ones from the actual studios that own the films. Warner Brothers is now releasing some of their less popular films on DVD-R, so they can burn them on demand rather than lose money by mass producing them for sale through retail outlets.
Time will tell, I guess. But I will look into this further. I know someone who knows Carl Craig, so perhaps he can shed some light on the situation.

I'd like to see them do the Heisei Gamera series. Those overrated films (especially the second one) need to be taken down a notch or two. I love Gamera 2, and overrrated or not they were at least quality efforts by all involved, not like the studio mush that the modern Godzilla movies became.

Kadokawa bought out Daiei to become Kadokawa Daiei. In 2002 or sometime around then, they decided to drop the Daiei name and just become Kadokawa.

At some point, we are going to start selling our Riffs on DVD and see how well they do, because it doesn't seem like there is much money to be made on RiffTrax unless you are one of the MST3K guys. I certainly didn't expect to be become rich, but when you're offering a Gamera riff for $1-$2 and it includes the film (so you don't have to buy the DVD like you would have to do with KING KONG), I think it should do better than a dozen copies on six months. Especially since Gamera is an MST3K icon, so I would have expected it to sell better. Of course, I have to take into account that the iRiff website has been more-or-less offline since November. I wish I could get one of the other films uploaded, but no such luck. I'd be curious to see how well all three films would do if they were released at the same time as I originally planned. I have to wonder if some people put off buying SUPER MONSTER because they were waiting for the other two films, and I really wanted to delete SUPER MONSTER and release it later with the other two films, but I couldn't do anything to add or remove films from my account. We have to revamp a few things, like come up with our own theme song instead of using the MST3K theme music, so we don't get sued by anyone. I hope to have our next "new" iRiff done by the end of the year.

Also, if you get a chance to review SUPER MONSTER on RiffTrax, I would appreciate it, because it is tough to get reviews (most buyers don't bother to write them) and it is tough to sell copies without reviews if you are a relatively new riffer. Most of the reviews we currently have were from friends of mine who have seen the film, not from "real" customers.

Preferably on the RiffTrax iRiff website where potential customers can see it, although if you'd like to do a review here as well, that would be fine. Thanks!

So basicly what you are saying is... Mush they might be, but they were far more watchable in my opinion. I'd take that over something as obnoxious as Attack of Legion anyday. I prefer Kaneko's Death Note films personally. His first two Gamera films just fall way too flat for me. They always have, and they always will.

^I actually love Godzilla a lot. I love the original series of films directed (mostly) by Ishiro Honda and Jun Fukuda. Last year I watched all 28 films in order and once I reached the '80s it got to be a bit of a chore... not that there weren't a few bright spots: I very much enjoyed Godzilla vs, Biolantte (muddled but mostly successful attempt at a G sci-fi flick for adults and with a great visual style) and Godzilla 2000 (which succeeds in being a lot of fun, something I think is lacking in the newer films which can be, well, dull). Godzilla vs. Biolantte actually reminds me bit of Gamera 2, which is my favorite Gamera movies. The whole "Gamera is revived like Tinkerbell" thing being the only naff moment in the film. I think it was quite brilliant to approach a Japanese monster vs. monster flick as a serious alien invasion flick, with interesting, well disigned, and suitably "alien" creatures.

We're currently working on rebooting the show and will be doing a few new riffs on films like CURSE OF BIGFOOT. We plan to go back and remake the GAMERA episodes at some point. It may take awhile, though, so if anyone wants to buy our current riffs on DESTROY ALL PLANETS, GAMERA VS. MONSTER X and GAMERA SUPER MONSTER, please let me know. I don't know if I'd be allowed to post sales information here, but send me your e-mail address, or you can write to me directly at video_dan1@yahoo.com.
