As of today, Titanic's stranglehold on the highest box office of all time mark has been bested...
....by....another James Cameron film.
It's funny, when Dark Knight fell short, I figured Titanic would hold the number one spot for good, but along comes Avatar, and just like that, Titanic is now number 2 on the list.

Both crap films, not a shock they're the biggest then. Avatar's a bit of a cheat though as it mainly being shown in 3D means it costs more to see it, or at least I had to pay more. Is the list adjusted for inflation?

You're right about ticket prices - I think the record will fall every few years. As ticket prices go up, it becomes easier for a popular movie to make a ton of money without approaching the most ticket sales ever. I believe Avatar falls further back when inflation is included, as does Titanic.

Ajusted for inflation, Gone With the Wind is still the biggest movie of all time.

No DVD sales/rentals on GWTW - and it didn't play on TV for ages. Back in the day the bigger films would make return engagements. My mother would go see GWTW every time it was in town.
GWTW was kind of the Titanic for it's era. (Though Gone is a better movie) they both captured the fancy of the time.
I don't own a single James Cameron film on DVD, not even Terminator. But aside from the Abyss, I've never left the theater disappointed. I'm always amped up and happy afterwards.
With Cameron you either buy into or not. And you'll always have clunky dialog and other flaws. But he makes the theater going experience, an experience. It might not be timeless or perfect, but for those hours in the theater I'm having the time of my life.
I might not buy his DVDs, but I will always go see his work on the big screen. Obviously I'm not the only one.

I wonder if James Cameron is jealous of himself.
For the record: I loved Avatar, hated Titanic, and Gone With the Wind is the greatest movie of all time and I have seen it more times than I can count.
Carry on.
