Is anyone else a fan of the comedian turned screenwriter/director.
The original "Heartbreak Kid" and "Mikey and Nicky" are favorite films of mine, and even "Ishtar" has a great first half hour and some wonderfully awful songs. Wish she'd directed more.

Ishtar sort of killed her career.
A New Leaf is her best, IMHO.

A New Leaf is her best, IMHO. I need to see that one. I've read the studio recut it so it's a very different film than she intended. Actually all her films (outside "Heartbreak Kid") have a very troubled production history.

shep, you've GOT to see A New Leaf. it is, without a doubt, THE Elaine May picture. She directed it and acted in it superbly as did Walter Matthau and the rest of the cast. funny witty movie. and most unfortunately unavailable except on overly expensive out of print videotape. the much controvertial non-approved ending that ticked May off is a complete non-issue because, to me, the picture is perfect. Also have seen her acting in a long forgotten film from 1967 called Luv with Jack Lemmon.

I'm old enough I vaguely remember her stand up work. Man, I'm old.

Thank you! Just watched this on Youtube. Amazing, funny film. Very possibly her best work--though "Mikey and Nicky" is probably my still my personal fave.
