From the same team that produced "Band Of Brothers" on the European front of WW2, now comes "The Pacific" about our conflict with the Japanese. The trailers and previews all look pretty awesome, and of course it's in the same combat style of "Saving Private Ryan" and "Band Of Brothers". I'm going to be watching; anyone else going to check it out?

Definitely. Loved Band of Brothers, but since my grandfather was in the Pacific in WWII with the 3rd Marine Division, I've been hoping for quite a while that the other theater would get a similar treatment.
This production team has done outstanding work all around. I also thought From The Earth To The Moon was fantastic.

Definitely going to be watching this. Caught a preview/behind the scenes thingy on HBO last week, and it looked really great.

Watched the first two eps on Sunday. Liking it so far. The first one was so-so, but the 2nd was very good. I especially loved the ending in the mess.
But the title "The Pacific" is misleading. Other than some opening naration by Hanks, it's been very much about the Marines, though not one specific unit like in BoB. I could be wrong, but I don't even think Midway, the pivital encounter of the Pacific War, was mentioned at all. And despite spending the first two episodes focusing on it, the Guadacanal Campaign seemed very glossed over. Though, to be fair, they could have done a 10 episode mini-series just on that campaign alone.
Which is kind of the problem with the series. The scope just appears to be too large for this format. Band of Brothers worked because they focused one unit during essentially a 1 year stretch of the war in one particular theater of the war (no North Africa, no Italy, no Sicily). And they didn't even make an attempt to cover the entire ETO after Normandy, just the missions Easy Company went on.

I have to agree. Midway wasn't mentioned, unless I missed it putting the dog out. It's very big in scope, perhaps a bit too big. Still, it's worth watching.

I have to agree. Midway wasn't mentioned, unless I missed it putting the dog out. It's very big in scope, perhaps a bit too big. Still, it's worth watching. The first episode covered the additional Japanese attacks after Pearl Harbor, and setup the idea of Guadacanal as a "line in the sand", but but beyond that you didn't get much of a sense of what was going on. And other than the mention of the Navy pulling out, I don't remember a mention of the naval battles around the island or the Marine fighter pilots flying out of Henderson. But I do like the Leckie (the writer) a lot. And the other main character was interesting as well.

I'm enjoying it. The title may be a little misleading, but as has been said, Band of Brothers was hardly about the entire European Theater. No 10-part miniseries could be expected to cover the entirety of either theater.
And I agree, the first episode was a little slow, but last Sundays was extremely good. The chaos of the battles (and the humorous rivalry between the Army and Marines) were very well done, in my opinion. And the last scene was excellent – everyone knows about Guadalcanal and the 1st Marines. Awesome.
