I present: The western meadow lark, aka "the bird I always hear but hardly ever see". (The picture's not mine, just for the record...) It torments me almost as much as... The pilated woodpecker. When I lived in Missouri, I could never see one, but I heard them all the time. I think I saw maybe one before my family moved... (again, the pics not mine. If I could see one long enough to get a picture, I would be crying with joy...)

Here is an interesting video where a hawk attacks and drowns a magpie. The hawk has trouble killing the magpie so he drags it over to a pool of water and holds it under water.

I recently planted a butterfly garden, with birdbath, that I can see from my desk. One of the few moments I spent at my desk today, I was rewarded by a mama Cardinal coming to drink from the birdbath. The birdbath is made from a large shallow pottery bowl balanced on some wood, glazed a neat dark reddish color. The lady Cardinal coordinated very nicely with it.
She was the second bird to get anywhere near the thing. The first was a Carolina Wren who very tidily pulled a pine needle from the water before flying away. No baths yet, but that's not the point.

The beak and the scissor-tail looks like it's probably some kind of flycatcher, but I doubt it's anything that'll ever be seen in the States. That picture has to be enhanced, doesn't it? Or else the bird is plugged in.

Woo-hoo is right, friendly! Your long search has paid off. That must feel good. Now what will Ahab do?
It's been a few days since I've felt well enough to look around here much (nasty cold), but you folks have posted some amazing birds. That hawk killing the magpie- wow. And the hornbill! And groupie's latest entry into psychedelia. All wonderful in their own ways.
Birdgirl, I used to have a Pileated Woodpecker that would visit the live oak outside my apartment. It was always great to hear the whonk whonk whonk of its "pecking".

You can actually attract Pileated Woodpeckers if you hide behind a tree and shout whonk whonk whonk. Give it a try, everybody!

^i've been doing that for years for unrelated reasons. never once saw a pileated woodpecker.
i remember a couple of years ago after a night of drinking absinthe, i went to bed sometime around dawn and just as i was starting to fall asleep, a woodpecker began pecking the side of my house, right next to my bedroom window. mother nature is not without a sense of humor.
and way to go, chicken, on finding the magpie. have some spam!
