Great pics, AFC! My brother and his wife are heading to Kauai (sp?) later this month for about a week and a half. I read the story about little people building a fishpond overnight in one of the brochures.

Thank you, Bix. Kauai is the island with the most menehune stories and "artifacts." I hope they enjoy their stay there. Kauai is a very beautiful Island. My second favorite next to the one I live on. Speaking of my island, I've meant to post a map of Hawai'i island so that you could picture where the places I'm describing are actually located. So here's the one I found: Anyone who remembers the show "Dinosaurs" may recognize the shape. They used it as the shape of Pangaea on the show. And here's one that has the major Hawaiian islands: We are the most isolated place where people live in the world. Our closest neighbor to the east is California and it's 2,300 miles away. Nothing is south of us until you reach Antarctica. To the west, Japan is 3,800+ and to the north is Alaska, which is 2,700+ miles away. Here's a local song that pretty much tells the story. It's by The Brothers Cazimero and it's called "Home in the Islands." It ends at the 3:10 mark. I'm not sure what the song after that is called. "At home in the islands, in the middle of the sea."

I always wanted to go to Easter Island but it too is so remote and hard to get to. I think you have to go to Ecuador or Chile or someplace and get yet another visa to go to Easter Island. Well and also there isn't anything there except those freakin heads. Then I really wanted to go to Iceland but apparently it burned down or somethin.

This has been interesting reading, nice pics too.
I learned new trivia today that got me thinking of this blog. Adam West got his start on something called the Kini Popo Show. He also married a Hawaiian woman named either Ngahra Frisbie or Ngatokoruaimatauaia Frisbie Dawson (Adam just called her Nga).
Wish I could find a picture of him on the show to share but I struck out. From Popo to caped crusader to MST3K turkey day host (and Zombie Nightmare cop). It's 6 degrees of Adam West!

During the recent tsunami warning, CNN kept pointing to Easter Island as Hawai'i and never corrected themselves. I kept screaming at the TV, "NO IT"S NOT!" I didn't know Hawai'i was ONE island and extremely close to South America...and I live here! What did happen to Iceland? It was there a few weeks ago. I'm glad that some of what I'm posting here is coming through because I could swear I have no idea what I'm doing! The Kini Popo Show was around when my parents were teenagers and I remember them mentioning it every-time they saw Adam West. It's kind of neat because Adam West became a part of two generations of Hawai'i kids growing up. Once through Kini Popo and again through Batman. Here's what little info I could find on the show. Carl "Kini Popo" Hebenstriet was part of the very first TV broadcast in Hawai'i. He was originally from Walla Walla, Washington, the same town Adam West was from. His show started off as a variety show but ended up being a show for kids and had a chimp in it. I don't think you can find a picture from it because it was live and never recorded. Looked up Adam's ex-wife and found out she's Tahitian. I knew that name wasn't Hawaiian because the language has no t's in it. Kini Popo means "right on the ball."

That "At Home in the Islands" song is kini popo. That probably makes no sense whatsoever. But I like it.

Today, I want too share more of Hawai'i's comedy. A warning: It has ethnic humor. No offense is meant. In Hawai'i, it is done with no malice and we would say, "It's all in good fun." This first video is by Frank Delima, who's kind of Hawai'i's Benny Hill. It's a parody of Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start the Fire" and is about our recent tsunami warning. The word baboose(bah-booze) is Portuguese for stupid, idiot. Mahalo ke akua means "thanks be to god" or "thank god" for short. Next, we have a compilation of Hawai'i comedians. In order of appearance: Unknown, Booga Booga with Rap Reiplinger, Andy Bumatai, Mel Cabang, Ed Kaahea, Rap Reiplinger. Here, the "Laughing Samoans" do one of those "back when I was young" jokes: Next is a 1980's local show called "Pidgin' to the Max." It has a little gay humor which was a part of it's time: Lastly, I present too you Augie T. He is arguably the most popular comedian around today. He's Filipino, so his jokes here are aimed at himself and his community: Again, not one video would embed! I hope you enjoyed and it all came through nicely. Until next time, Aloha. EDIT: Thank you Spackle! For sending me a message on what I may have been doing wrong on my embeddings. Mahalo nui loa! Now, I'll go back and fix the rest.

The tsunami song is great.... but leaves me confused. What, more pork and beans than SPAM?!?
Also, "KDEN" news. That's brilliant. I can't believe I've never heard that before. I'm doomed to never be able to say "Okay, then" with a straight face again. And I loved the honest weather report.

The tsunami song is great.... but leaves me confused. What, more pork and beans than SPAM?!? That's because, 1: They limit the supply of spam you can buy during times of emergencies; I'm not kidding; and 2: Spam would have sold out first. So this customer could buy only one can of spam but all the pork and beans he wanted. That's why at one point he states it as a question, "pork and beans?" "K-den!" ;D

I'm going to do something kind of weird. I'm going to share with you the best little islands of these islands. Did that make sense? Since the island I live on is the youngest, there is almost no small islands off-shore. So, I'll identify and let you know where these little treasures are located. First, I'd like to share the two most famous: This is, from the left, Manana(mah-nah-nah) Island aka: Rabbit Island because of the rabbits that once lived on it, and Kaohikaipu(kah-oh-ee-kah-ee-poo) Island. This is located on the eastern side of the most southern point of Oahu, near Waimanalo(why-ma-na-low.) This is Na Mokulua(nah mow-koo-loo-ah) which means two Islands. This is located off of Lanikai(lah-knee-kah-ee) in Kailua on the east side of Oahu. I could climb up the hills behind my house and see these islands. I take you quickly to Maui too show you: Molokini(mow-low-key-knee) Island which is one of the top spots for divers in the world. It is located between Maui and Kaho'olawe(Kah-oh oh la-vay), which is located south of Maui. Do you want to go to Gilligan's Island? Well, then here's: Moko o lo'e(moh-coal-oh-low-eh) aka: coconut island, which was used for the long shots of Gilligan's island. There was no one living there in the 60's, now there are marine biology labs located here. It's located off of Kane'ohe(Kah-knee-oh-ee), which is near Kailua and is once again on the east side of Oahu. This next island is a few more miles down the road from Gilligan's Island: This is Mokoli'i(moh-coal-lee-ee) Island aka: Chinaman's Hat. When I was young, my family rented a beach house every summer that was right on the shore near this island. When it's low tide, you can walk here, but be sure to leave before high tide. Otherwise, you'll be stuck there. It's my personal favorite of all these little guys. Lastly, I have to share, again, Hilo's lone island: Moku Ola(mow-cool oh-la) or the other coconut island. This is located in Hilo bay and is one of the only small islands on this island. Well, I hope you had fun visiting these little beauties. Until next time, Aloha.

Wow those are really beautiful pics AFC. The diving must be terrific there. I got my open water license in Okinawa back in the 1980s (that's a good diving place too). I haven't dived any in the last many years or so because over the years I became afraid of sharks and now I don't even swim in the ocean (I've never even seen a shark in real life) nevertheless.... (Last time I wrote this, Truck Farmer posted a youtube video of excerpts from the movie Megalodon).
