I don't know what the general consensus was but I really enjoyed the 1984 Giorgio Moroder version of Metropolis. I liked the sepia and bronze toned look of the production, and the partial restoration of some of the stills etc.

Sorry, matto. I'm a purist when it comes to this film. I really didn't like the colorization.
(The restored silent Phantom of the Opera is tinted, which was how it was originally released. That I like.)

YES! YES YES YES YES YES YES YES!! Can you tell I'm happy? Ever since I heard of the find I've wanted to see it. I tried watching it when they were showing a stream of it in Europe a few months ago, but it was a no go. Now, I can look forward to the DVD release later this year.
Thanks for posting this good news, Chuck.
PS: I have that restored Phantom of the Opera. The ball sequence is great with the tinting. I'm glad they were able to restore it.

I saw the restored silent Ben-Hur, and it, too, was tinted as originally presented.

Hey! I saw that too! I admit, I'm kind of a silent film buff. Heck, I'm a part of the few that are patiently waiting for DVD releases of "Greed," "He Who Gets Slapped," "Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse," and other silent film goodies.
I noticed that in the Metropolis article it's stated that you can tell where the new found footage is in the film because of it's degraded quality. My first thought was "So what!" We get to see it, that's all that matters. The author does point that out, that was just my initial reaction when I read it.
If they found the missing scenes in "The Magnificent Ambersons" I wouldn't care what quality they were in. But this film, like "Greed," is a lost cause. It'll never be found.

chicken, from what I have read, I'm afraid the studio destroyed the footage from The Magnificent Ambersons' original ending.

I can't wait! I first saw Metropolis just a few months before the missing footage was found.

This is an incredible discovery. I've been eagerly waiting for this ever since I first read about it. I've seen the Giorgio Moroder version which made me fall in love with the film originally, but it's even better in b/w and without the '80s pop music.
