It's time. My son is watching MST3K. I'd already gotten him into Godzilla, and the only copy of Godzilla vs Megalon I have is the MST3K version, so we watched it and he liked it. He even 'got' that the robots were watching the movie with us. Although sometimes he takes what the say to heart, like he thinks the Seatopian bad guy's name is Oscar Wilde, and that Jet Jaguar really is telling the kid to not pee on him. (He really likes that joke.)
Anyway, from there we moved to the Gameras. He likes those a lot too, and he wants to watch the Crawling Eye ep too since they show it in the credits.
But, as you all know there are many many eps of MST3K that aren't child friendly (He's 4.5 yo, BTW). Whether it's because of content or because of lack of content--i.e. boredom inducing.
So, I wanted to make a list of Kid-Worthy eps. I'll start. I'm not actually going to put recommended or not since different parents have different values. I'm just going to put pluses and minuses from a kid-watching perspective.
===============================================================
213 - Godzilla vs Megalon
+ + + Fast paced, lots of action. Monsters and robots!
- Quite a bit of cussing for J&TBs (lots of war movie quotes). A little violent.
304 - Gamera vs Baragon
+ + + Plot moves at a pretty good pace. Lots of Monster scenes.
- - Maybe too much violence. A guy dies on camera. More than one real people fight scene.
308 - Gamera vs Gaos
+ + + Fast paced. Cool Monster.
- The laser is a little violent, actually cutting Gamera. They try and lure Gaos with blood, but it's pretty abstract and almost comical.
312 - Gamera vs Guiron
+ + + Fast paced. Lots of monsters.
- - - Very violent. Guiron cuts a monster into pieces. The alien ship is kind of scary, and the alien girls keep talking about killing people and even eating the children's brains!
===============================================================
Ones I'm considering:
J wants to watch Crawling eye, but as I recall, it is actually pretty scary (in that creepy old B&W kind of way) and doesn't a guy get decapitated?
I'm considering some of the earlier scifi ones, like Lost Continent and King Dinosaur. My main worry with these is that they will be too boring.
If I recall, Gorgo is a pretty straight forward giant monster movie.
Lassie sounds like a good pick, except that I think roughly 40% of all jokes are about the kids dad dying, lassie getting killed, the prospector getting killed... (I think another 40% are about snausages )
