Of all the Manos related topics I don't think this has ever been discussed.
Did the master have magical powers of some kind? It's kind of implied but we never see him do anything other worldly. And how long had he been living in the desert and collecting wives? And how did he and Torgo been aquaintances?

He's dead - but not in the way we know it.

I think you're right, it's pretty heavily implied but not explicitly stated that he has at least some vague, mystical power, letting him and Torgo hang out for many years. I'm pretty sure that Torgo is (or was, at some point during the production) supposed to have the remnants of a Civil War uniform, lending some credence to that idea.

I think the idea was Valley Lodge was supposed to pop in and out of existance, like Brigadoon or something, whenever the Master fancied a new bride.

I guess I'm just trying to figure out if the Master was really a mystical or just some crazy guy who ran a cult.

Well, he "waved a rusty tailpipe" at Torgo to put him in some sort of trance & he and his wives seem to sleep in some sort of vampiric suspended animation. Plus he can instantly sever a hand in unusual fashion by just holding it in a fire. He's also immune to bullets. Yep, I'd say he's some sort of immortal, undead, vampire, sorceror demon-guy or whatever. Add the Brigadoon-like house & Confederate Satyr & I'd say he just ain't one of us!

The beauty of Manos and the Master is that he can be all these things and more. That's the beauty in an intangible plot that is barely touched or explained or mentioned now that I think about it. He's whatever you want him to be. Hey if that kind of thinking worked for the filmmaker then it can work for you too.

Manos will be playing unMSTied on Elvira's Movie Macabre in the next couple weeks! Can't wait! And of course, by "can't wait" I mean "crying and hiding under the bed."

The beauty of Manos and the Master is that he can be all these things and more. More awful. More boring. More dreadful. Ad nauseum and stir.
