I imagine it's going to be slow around the house this weekend, so I'm thinking of maybe catching up on some of the more highly recommended Rifftrax that I haven't seen (such as The Sixth Sense, Twilight, etc.)
I know the idea is to use these RTs along with purchased or rented DVDs of the movie, but has anyone ever tried doing it while streaming the movie via VOD or a Neflix/Roku box? I have Netflix streaming via my PS3, and aside from the (correctable) risk of the movie "buffering" midway through, I don't see why it wouldn't work the same as a DVD. Right?

Sounds good to me but not with my crappy "turbo" connection. You'd be buffering every two minutes.

Well, I just attempted to watch the Battlefield: Earth RT via Netflix streaming, and the first couple of riffs went fine but then they started making no sense. I realized they weren't riffing what I was seeing, and was more than just a few frames off. I thought I would fast-forward to the next Disembaudio line, and it fixed itself for about 2 minutes and suddenly fell way off again.
There is apparently a different edit of the movie on Netflix that doesn't line up with the RT track. That blows. Now I have to actually get a copy of the stupid DVD...

Just recently I've heard of people complaining about streaming Netflix because some of the material they have on the site is edited. I'd be cautious about it.

But that's wrong, somehow! Netflix can't just "edit" movies. (Even one as ridiculous as Battlefield Earth.) What gives?

Not sure what is up with it. I've never attempted RiffTrax with Netflix Streaming, so I wouldn't know. I wasn't even aware that some of their films are altered until a few days ago when someone mentioned scenes that weren't in the feature that should have been on something they were watching. I don't know if it's Netflix's fault or if they're making do with what the studios are giving them (perhaps the studios don't want their full movies available for free).
If you have a Netflix account, couldn't you send for the actual DVD? Or are you streaming only (is that an option? I haven't checked)?

Well, I can send out for the DVD, which I'm sure I'll do now that I have the trax. But I usually reserve the mail-only DVDs for "good" movies I want to watch. I'll make an exception here.
But that sucks if this is regular practice on Netflix streaming. Not so much for the Rifftrax problems, but I don't want ANY movie I'm watching to be a "Netflix edit". I want the real thing. . .I'm not on a friggin' airplane, for cryin' out loud. I'm going to have to look into this some more and maybe even contact Netflix about it.

Just wanted to let you know that we added a description to the Battlefield Earth product page about this netflix discrepancy. As far as we know, this is the only streaming movie that this is an issue for. Streaming itself should give you no problems with rifftrax watching, be it from amazon, itunes, netflix, etc.

Thanks, Conor. I just wish Netflix streamed more movies that you guys have done that I would like to see (i.e. Twilight series, Wicker Man, etc.). It's okay, I was jonesing to watch SOMETHING from Rifftrax so I went ahead and bought the "Missle to the Moon" VOD. Figured I couldn't go wrong with that. Good stuff!

PS: I asked Netflix on Twitter about this (you can't email them anymore), and here's the reply I got:
Streaming content may occasionally differ from theatrical/DVD release. If it's incorrect, however, please use the "Report problem" link.
But when I use their Report problem link, I'm only given a multiple choice range of problems, none of which is "movie was butchered for streaming purposes".

Just a thought, I think I've read before that Battlefield Earth's DVD is actually an extended cut that runs about two minutes longer. Maybe it's a possibility that the one on streaming is the theatrical cut.
A possibility. I don't know the history of Battlefield Earth nor do I care to learn it. It's something that I picked up somewhere.
