Oh yeah, I just didn't watch Love Exposure for several nights in a row. Been meaning to ever since Spackle referenced it, but haven't felt up to the 237-minute runtime. Catholicism, cross-dressing, the porn biz, a brain-washing cult, arts martial and marital . . . you should not make a point of not checking this one out. Just a moment . . . Phantom Films? I smell a rat.

I'm trying to decide if I want to not catch the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy remake. The BBC mini-series was just so damned well done, especially in terms of casting. Le Carré said that Alec Guiness' portrayal of George Smiley was so strong that it overrode his own image of the character, and it was some years before he could write him again. I'm not sure what a remake can really do better, especially given the shorter run time. About the only nits I pick in the original are how it would have been nice to do the Hong Kong sequences there instead of Spain and Tony Esterházy's English is too good (the joke in the books is that no one's sure where he's actually from, as he speaks eight languages but all with strong and inconsistent accents). But then I heard that John Hurt plays Control. Hmm, maybe I'll break down and not not catch it after all. T'm definitely not sure I don't agree with seeing it. The cast list alone does not make me not shake in my Anglophile boots.

Sorry, I realize I'm the one who started the multiple negation bit, but are you looking forward to it or dreading it?
I think two things especially worry me. One is trying to do the story over feature-length as opposed to mini-series. The other is that--unless they rewrite the scenario out of all connection with the original--you can't set the story much beyond the '70s. A lot of the things I've seen that try to set themselves in other times don't come off through a weird self-consciousness about it, if that makes any sense.
Now, if I heard that Patrick Stewart was back to reprise the role of Karla, I'm pretty sure I couldn't keep away, though whether those scenes could work without Sir Alec . . .
To get back to the nugatory negatoriness, I'll quote a favorite bit from cartoonist Dan O'Neill: "To see or to Nazi, that is the question."

I confused myself too.
Just watch it. Even if it's not as good as the original, it will be fifty times better than pretty much anything in a local multiplex.

You're probably right, but I doubt I'll rush right out. Too many Kitano films to catch up on. I finally stopped not watching his Hanabi, and it's gorgeous.

I just finished not watching that crazy man taking a dump in the street. I mean I saw like a second of it but I didn't see the rest.
I have no idea how the thing ended.
