With The Walking Dead on hiatus, Boardwalk Empire and Breaking Bad months away, I'm fiending. Thank the maker for Game of Thrones. Who else is eagerly awaiting it's return this Sunday, and will join me in discussion?
I can't be the only rabid fan of this show around here. Since the last season, I've read all the books and have become a real nerd about it. When it comes down to either the books or the TV show, it's just great storytelling IMO. The characters are compelling and vivid, the conflicts engaging and complex, and if last season is any indicator, the cast is spot on.
I can't remember the last time I've had so much anticipation for a show's return.

I just reread all of them back in January probably my favorite book series ever. I also have a lot of respect for the show because they stayed painfully faithful to the material and as somebody who also happens to be a lover of comics I know how rare something like that is.
Oh and for anybody who read dance what did you think of the "Reek" chapters? I loved how disturbing they were.

Yeah, that's what I meant by good storytelling. There's no need to tamper with the source material. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. The only thing that worries me is that the show has grown so popular, and is in such high demand, that they will churn out seasons so fast that they will catch up to Martin's output. This guy takes years to release these books, and it could leave the show in the lurch. On the flipside, I'm also hoping that the surge in popularity will spur him to finish the story that much faster.
I agree with you on the Reek storyline. I really dug his fall from grace, and the dark corners it has taken him to. My personal favorite tidbit was when he hinted that the Bastard Bolton has removed more than just a few fingers and toes, if you catch my drift. I've noticed Martin has a knack for making me hate a character, and then showing me their human side. This happened for me with both Jamie and Theon/Reek.
I think this season is going to be the tits because the second book is probably my favorite. I have been wondering if they will be telling the entire book in the second season, or maybe have to break things up due to it's massive scope. Then again, they could just give some sections the axe, but I really wish they wouldn't.

I really enjoyed the first episode, but was left wanting more (I suppose that's a sign of a good show). Having now watched the show after I've read the book, I really marveled at the way they balanced the storylines into a one hour format. They continue to follow the source material faithfully (for the most part), while molding it into a different shape.
I don't know how I feel about the actor playing Stannins. He can look the part, but his voice is nowhere as stern as I imagined. However, I'm very pleased at the slow reveal of the dire wolves true size. I just assumed they would take the easy road and keep using normal sized wolves, but this episode is evidence that the show runners are really attached to the source material.

Bumping this because Mrs. Atari got me the book series for Christmas. I'm through the first two books and I'm catching up on the show, as well. My goal is to be all caught up with the books and the show before the season 3 premiere in March.
I've found myself alternately engrossed and frustrated with Martin's plots and twists. Those same descriptions are apt for my feelings about the show.
I'll admit I was totally confused about the Reek/Ramsey Snow/Theon switcheroo at Winterfell in the second book. I had to look on Wikipedia and assorted online helps to finally understand what happened there. Even after I got the gist of it, I went back and re-read the pertinent chapters and still missed it. So it's nice to see the above comments hinting that I'll learn more about Reek in subsequent books.

Very happy that season 3 started tonight. Sadly, the episode was very dull. I know it's just putting the pieces in place for what's coming in an eventful season, but virtually nothing of substance happened tonight.
I just finished the fifth book last week, so I'm finally caught up, and I'm really looking forward to this season.

I have to agree, it was pretty much all set up, but the pay off is going to be sweet.
Now if he could just hurry up and finish the next book...

Don't ask him when the book comes out. Every time someone does, a Stark is killed!!!!!

Heh. As popular as this show is, I'm surprised more people haven't chimed in on here.

I've been pretty cool on GoT the last couple of ... well, season 4 and 5, really, have been a bit repetitious and slow for my taste. But last week's episode was full on. Got a bit talky with Little Finger and Sansa but other than that, nonstop action and castle intrigue. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season now, after a slow start.
Plus I loved the twist of how Tommen is the complete opposite of Joffrey in all sorts of different ways, but is in fact just as worthless in terms of leadership. It's hilarious to contemplate how Joffrey would have handled that stare-down contest with the faith militant. He wouldn't have slunk off with his tail between his legs, that's for sure. Never thought I'd miss that little inbred bastard, but there it is. There it sits.
Whatever happened to Hodor and all them little skrying brats? I'll be damned if I can remember. I really need some cliff's notes for this thing.
I'm also surprised this board isn't totally lit up with GoT geekery, as well as Silicon Valley and Veep chatter. Maybe folks around here just don't get H.B.O.

Whatever happened to Hodor and all them little skrying brats? I'll be damned if I can remember. I really need some cliff's notes for this thing. The show is caught up with that story line vis-à-vis the book, so I think they are stalling. I think what they are involved in will have big implications with the finale so they can't advance too quick in that area and other plot lines need to catch up. At first I was pissed to know that the show would march on with the books unfinished. Now that I'm seeing the changes they are making (and given what I already think will happen in the final leg of the books just from research and theories), I'm ok with it. The show will provide a simplified version of events, and the books will be different and rich enough to be enjoyable on their own. This whole scenario will probably ruin some of the big surprises and reveals though. Unavoidable really. I'm also surprised this board isn't totally lit up with GoT geekery, as well as Silicon Valley I love Silicon Valley, and pretty much anything Mike Judge does.

Silicon Valley needs to add a hot male model or two to its cast so my girlfriend will watch it.
