Actually, canines in the wild never eat grain, so it makes sense that some dogs would not be able to digest gluten. It's not natural to their diet. Carbs in general aren't great for dogs. But there are plenty of grain-free dog foods that are less expensive than that.
And now to make this a Sloane post:
