Damn. That sucks. I guess they all have to go some day, all the great titans of yesteryear. His work looked somehow more real than a lot of smoothly artificial CGI and even today animators occasionally try deliberately to imitate the Harryhausen look.

Ray Harryhausen was a huge part of my childhood. When I was three years old, my mother bought me a VHS copy of Jason and the Argonauts because I was into skeletons at the time, and it quickly became my favorite movie for many, many years. During that time, I made it my mission to see every Harryhausen movie I could find; I probably saw them all. I can't tell you how many hours I've devoted to watching his movies- hell, I can't count how much time I spent watching JATA alone. I grew up seeing some of the most incredible advances in special effects technology progress from their crude beginnings to the sophisticated state they're currently in, but none of those things filled me with as much childlike awe as Harryhusen's little clay figurines. There's never gonna be anyone else like him. Rest in peace, Ray.

Any fan of stop motion, or even special effects in general, owes this guy a debt of gratitude. I haven't seen all his films, but I'm very familiar with his work and reputation. He was a true legend, RIP.

I'll admit I'm not entirely familiar with his work (with the exception of Clash of the Titans), but that's still sad to hear such a legendary special effects guy passed away today. R.I.P. Ray
