i appreciate manos for being just so over-the-top bizarre, but it isn't a laugh riot. i definitely wouldn't show it to someone who has never seen an mst3k before. actually, mitchell, i feel the same way about cave dwellers that you do about manos. everyone seems to love that one, but i just can't get into it. I totally agree on Manos. The riffing, either with MST or with Rifftrax is the only thing that makes the movie even remotely watchable. I remember reading an article in Entertainment Weekly that argued Manos was actually the worst movie of all time, made on a bet between Hal Warren, and theater owner, Tom Neyman, who played the Master. Anyway, the magazine reported that the audience laughed during most of the movie.

I loved Manos the first time I saw it. The riffs are top notch, Torgo is hilarious. It's win-win. "Been hittin' the thigh master Torgo?" "When carnies flirt!" "DO SOMETHING!!! GAH!!!" Experiment: "Mike, I'm afraid" Joel: "Of What?!"

You're not wrong in any way, it's just that you didn't find it funny. I loved the MST version, (favorite riff: DO SOMETHING! GAH! because of Joel's exasperation with the movie) but I didn't like The Magic Voyage of Sinbad or The Day the Earth Froze, So it's different strokes for different folks, which is what i love about this board you don't get blasted because tour opinion is differs from the majority.

I like Manos okay, but for a well-loved episode I can't get into, it's either Pod People or Werewolf.

I feel the same way about the entire Sci-Fi era. I just didn't like Pearl as the main villain. She was whiny, immature, and she, Bobo, and Observer never had the chemistry that Clayton and Frank had. Bill Corbett, God bless his soul, just didn't fit into Crow. The recurring storylines were just pointless. (Though that one was forced on them by the channel, I heard.) Also, I think the riffing really took a step down, especially in Final Sacrifice, which almost bored me to sleep (As in, both the riffing AND the movie), and Puma Man, where they try to pass off the main character as much whinier than he actually is.

...and Puma Man, where they try to pass off the main character as much whinier than he actually is. What, did the MST3K edit accidentally remove all the heroic bits?

It's not one of mine either. I actually prefer the Rifftrax version of it as I didn't get bored with it, not once.
It just sits there. Staring at ya, daring ya to say something....
Just ugh

I've recently gained a new perspective on this since recently attending a screening of the restored Manos in Seattle. So, for the first time, I watched the movie all on its own, without any riffing. And it's fascinating.

I liked Manos right out of the gate. When I first saw it, I was somewhat new to MST3K and it didn't bore me at all. It was instantly one of my favorites that I had seen thus far; it actually made me appreciate the host segments more. When I first started watching, I wasn't a big fan of the host segments, I would always be like, "oh, they're going to stop the movie and do one of their stupid things." After I got to know the characters more, I started enjoying the host segments. But I liked them for Manos right away and it made me rethink the whole host segment stuff. And the riffing made me crack up. As for the movie, I couldn't believe someone had actually, intentionally PUT THAT ON SCREEN. The movie itself was a hoot, even without the riffing, so I got double enjoyment on this one.
So, there you go.
