When I read someone asking to explain a riff, I sometimes think to myself, how can someone not know that? Like when I was a kid there was a series of commercials for a cereal where Eule Gibbins said "Ever eat a pine tree? Some parts are edible you know." I feel like I saw that commercial 3 or 4 times a day for about 10 years. When I heard the quote for a minute I couldn't believe that people didn't get it. Then I realized that it's the kind of thing that once it stops, it stops. If you're 5 years younger than me you never saw it.
Another example are sports related ones. There's commercials and sayings from sports that I've heard 10,000 times. Once in a while I use them and people look at me totally confused because they've never heard them before.
That's one of the great things about MST3k. There are a bunch of riffs that are geared for someone who is Joel's age. But there are so many riffs you don't need to get them to love the show.
Are there any riffs that you recognized instantly and seemed obvious that other people just didn't get?

Read the book!
Yep, those ads from the 80s with that tag line. I believe one was for Dianetics; more like burn the book; and the other I remember was, I think, from a line of Time/Life books about ancient mysteries.
So if you didn't see those commercials the riffs are an "I don't get it that one" moment.
