I had a little back and forth with Erik from Rifftrax Support concerning sound issues that we've experienced at certain live shows. He was kind enough to take the time to give me a thorough explanation that makes sense to me. I wanted to share it here...
Hey Gary,
We have seen some complaints, but in general they appear to be isolated to individual theater (which are able to control their own in-house volume and in some cases the mix as well). We are always sure to send out a mix that sounds good to us in the truck (where the direction happens) and that's the mix that goes to theaters. The proof that this is a per-theater issue is the fact that with Anaconda, some people report having perfect sound all throughout, while others don't. Unfortunately there's only so much we can do, and we always ask people who have sound issue at their theaters to a) let their theater know immediately, and b) if they can, tweet to @fathomevents who can actually call the theater and work with them on the issue.
I know that Godzilla had its own issues (the movie was super loud and dynamic, resulting in some of these problems) but we took that experience and applied it to Anaconda which from what we can tell was unanimously praised for the sound, despite a few complains on the Satellite News page. I responded to them by saying essentially what I told you, that we have pretty much got this figured out, and any other issues are almost always due to their individual theater.
Hope this helps and I hope to see you at Santa Claus. (We have some really great titles lined up for next year too.)
