Is anyone watching this embarrassing, hot mess? My expectations were low, but...wow. (I couldn't sit through their Sound of Music broadcast). This is horrid. I don't know whose idea it was to cast Christopher Walken, but he looks lost. Allison Williams is a terrible Peter Pan. She's just saying her lines like she's reading them off a page, no emotion, blah, can't act to save her life. And too, well, girly. The flying scenes are laughable, I can't imagine anyone liking this. They changed it almost beyond recognition. If anyone has never seen Peter Pan before and think that's what they are watching, well, no. I saw A&E's live version a few years ago with Cathy Rigby and I just watched this out of curiosity.
The Lost "Boys" are like 40, I know they usually cast older guys as the Lost Boys (and women as well) but this is ridiculous (if you're going to go that route, you might as well just cast Peter as a boy and not a woman, if you're so worried about him looking too old when all the rest are that far off). And all of them look too alike, indistinguishable from each other. At least the one that A&E aired, you were able to tell who was whom and they had personalities. Tiger Lily might as well not even be in it. I WAS wondering how they would get around that "Ug-a-Wug" racist song; they changed it to probably a real phrase in some Native language, maybe Cherokee or something (I think the actress is of Cherokee heritage), so maybe they looked into using something real, though I don't speak any Native language, heh, so I don't know. But the song itself was lifeless, so, that took away from anything they were trying to do.
The new songs they added suck.
Well, everything sucks.
I think Cathy Rigby did a much better job. Though she was still quite "girly", at least she could act more like a young, stubborn boy and had more personality. And she looked like she was having fun during the flying scenes, flipping around and everything. This was TV, they had some time to prepare, they could've done a better job with that. The sets were sucky, too. The fight scene with the pirates was pretty anit-climactic. In other words, everything sucked on ice. (Whoever directed this did a terrible job getting anyone motivated to, well, ACT).
I don't know if this needs it's own thread, I don't know how many people will care about adding their two cents, but I had nowhere else to put this. I guess I could have put it in the "just finished watching" category, but anyway...
I don't know how to feel about Peter Pan in general. I know it's supposed to be a beloved, timeless classic, but, to me, the story itself is pretty creepy, not to mention, pretty darn depressing.
Having a woman play a young boy is weird, though, I can't really picture a young boy singing these songs. I think they were written specifically for Mary Martin. (That version is on Youtube, though I haven't watched it yet, maybe I will out of curiosity - the Cathy Rigby version is also, actually there's more than one Rigby version on there).
But, anyway, the play version notwithstanding, even the original story is creepy and depressing.
What do you, the viewers think?
