Colleen Grey, best known to MSTies for her roles in Leech Woman and Phantom Planet, has passed at age 92.
Ms. Grey had a long and storied career, starring in many A pictures, including Kiss of Death and The Killing. But she'll always be most treasured around these parts as the vengeance seeking, thwarted alkie wife June Talbot in Leech Woman! Whether she's trolling a shady mark down on the waterfront or setting her smarm-tastic dickwad of a husband up for a pituitary puncture, Grey gave it her all, mostly while wearing tons of old age makeup.
It's easy to laugh at a scifi monster flick, but Coleen understood that no matter how silly the role, the character took her situation and her desires seriously. She was utterly believable as a woman who's been so yanked around by both her society and her spouse that when she's handed an opportunity for revenge, one she never dreamed could exist for her, there's not a nanosecond of hesitation. Later, when the "oops, it wears off faster and faster" side effects manifest, she's terrific in thinking on her feet and putting herself in a situation where she by all rights should be the victim, only to turn the tables and score some sweet, sweet pineal.
So go gently into that good night, Ms. Grey. Your visage and your commitment to your roles will not soon be forgotten, here or anywhere.
Now it's hot jazz murder music! Scooby dooby do, he's dead!
