I've been fascinated with the KTMA era of MST3K and the way it was gradually discovered by fans. Is there anyone here with memories of how the KTMA shows made their way to the public trading communities? Are there any records of old message boards or newsgroups uncovering information about these shows? I assume there was a time when people had to piece together episode guides and whatnot; I recall that before the Amazing Colossal Episode Guide came out that there were even rumors of KTMA shows that never actually existed. Key events I'm aware of: - 1995: The MST Scrapbook Tape includes KTMA material including segments from the pilot other KTMA episodes (K03 among them)
- 1996: Amazing Colossal Episode Guide comes out: It gives us the definitive episode guide for the KTMA shows.
- 2004: The final host segment to K15 is found
- 2008: The Green Slime Pilot is screened in it's entirety and bootlegs makes their way to youtube
- 2009: Jim Mallon's MST3K.com releases never-before-seen clips of K01-K03
- 2016: K01 & K02 are released via MST3K's Kickstarter campaign
Are there anymore significant events in the history of MST3K KTMA tape trading? Was there a time when other KTMA shows were considered missing holy-grail episodes? for instance, was there a eureka moment when somebody came forward with the tape for "Humanoid Woman" in 1992? I'm interested to trace the history of this stuff!

Maybe it's worth mentioning we first got a glimpse of seeing City on Fire and Gamera vs Barugon in 1992.

They have Hangar 18 on youtube and that was definitely from the KTMA season. I saw that movie in theaters when it was originally released, and hope one day they can make these available to us. I'd love to have a MST3K version of Hangar 18. Of course I'd like to have the original too.

My own personal history is that I started tape-trading in the late 90s and by then The only thing missing was K00-K03 and the last segment of K15, I think. I got Gamera vs. Barugon, City on Fire, and The Million Eyes of Su-Maru from Joe Barlow.

Any history on this topic would involve a deep search of the USENET group: rec.arts.tv.mst3k.misc

Hope you don't mind the bump. - Episode Guides were spotty. One early version of the guide were missing some movies, and included ones that were never used. Rumored episodes included Thunderbirds in Outer Space (usually listed as K01) and The Chill Factor. (LINK)
- In a post from 1995, "Gamera vs. Gaos", "Mighty Jack", "Fugitive Alien", and "Superdome" are introduced into tape trading circulation. Thunderbirds Are Go is listed as a potential KTMA show, as is Space 1999: Moonbase Alpha (LINK)
- at some point, somebody uses a handy-dandy Videohound Movie Guide to figure out that The Chill Factor was likely not an episode of the show, as it was too recent of a movie. (LINK)
- 9/26/1995 is the day MSTies got the actual correct listing of KTMA shows. Somebody named Juliewa (who was tasked with finding an episode list for a few months) uncovered the real list (no airdates) (LINK)

I know "Thunderbirds in Outer Space" was mentioned in the original KTMA promo as an upcoming feature, but it never appeared. Anybody know why they decided against that one?

I would be inclined to assume that the promo simply mixed up the two movies. KTMA probably had all the Thunderbirds compilation movies in their library. BUT, Since Joel recently stated in some Kickstarter update thing that he thinks there might have been a SECOND pilot between Green Slime and K01 proper, It makes me wonder if THAT'S really what happened-- He filmed K01 with Thunderbirds in Outer Space; the promo was made, and then for some reason they had to redo it and used Invaders From The Deep instead!
