Man, I'm laughing like every time they impersonate Graham Greene's halting, shouty performance.

Honestly, the longer this one sits with me the fonder I am of it. Lines just jump out at me randomly and I keep laughing at them. There's some masterclass riffs in this episode.
I'm actually pretty excited about revisiting this one for my blog.

Pffft. Lightweights. I eat movies like this for breakfast. I actually thought the movie was a good choice. If anything it reminded me of Future War, only with crappy CGI instead of crappy puppets. But the riff was fairly patchy, with the highs running REALLY high, like laugh until I can't breathe high, while lows were mostly just riding a mediocre wave. One thing I will say for certain, when the monster was kicked into outer space and there was an explosion, causing Crow to scream "BEAST WARS!!!" I air pumped my fists and went "YES!" Glad I'm not the only one who freaked out over the BEAST WARS reference!!! I really enjoyed this episode, despite how awful the movie was.

I should have known you'd be the other person on this board to nerd out to that! It was such a perfect moment.

The thought of the SOL Crew riffing on an Asylum knockoff film occurred to me back whenever they announced the return with the 11th season. However, I am really glad they didn't do it then. Sticking to the old movie style was their best bet to lay the fan's minds to rest. Now that they've established their quality and how they set themselves apart from the old episodes, I find it to be a welcome change. Of course, my intrigue was peaked at the notion of riffing a mockbuster such as this. Atlantic Rim is a random choice, which is to say, any of them would do, so why not?
Be that as it may, they pulled it off with a grace that we've come to expect. The episode is definitely one that you could easily return to and get some great laughs every time. They go about it in the same way they would any bad movie and they succeed at every facet. My only hope is that they do not start making this an overly constant occurrence. One Asylum knockoff per season, maybe two, and I think they could go far. If these types of movies start to dominate the seasons, then I will start to grow a little concerned. If they keep it at a certain moderation, I would welcome another mockbuster in the next season. Atlantic Rim was a great success as far as I'm concerned!

Atlantic Rim was the title this season I was most worried about... but it ended up possibly being one of my favorites of the season! Also, if they do Asylum films in future seasons, I want this to be the start of a tradition where Asylum films are the second movie of the season, because they are all number 2.

I really wasn't a fan of this episode. All of the host segments were good, but the movie was just so boring that by the 30 minute mark, I was begging for it to end. And none of the riffing even came close to getting a laugh out of me. So, yeah this is definitely my least favorite episode so far.

Just saw "Atlantic Rim"; haven't read the other comments yet. So, was this movie an astonishingly clever spoof, or was it just really, really stupid? I can't really tell which.
Still, the riffing was good, and I thought the host segments were very funny.

My question is: What the hell was with the prologue for the episode. Are we ever shown who in the hell attacked Gizmonic Institute? If it was ever made apparent, I never caught it.

I'm on the "love it" side of Atlantic Rim. I was iffy about the choice, but seeing as Time Chasers was an even smaller gap between release and episode I don't think time is an issue. Asylum DOES make self aware shlock, but this wasn't one of them. It was the stupid and silly characters that really stole the show. The dudebro lead is a new favorite "love to hate" character in MST3K canon. I'm currently on Lords of the Deep, and while that is more of a MST3K movie than this is, I find it to be a real slog to get through. Atlantic Rim flew by for me.

I just keep thinking that "Pacific Rim" had commanding Idris Elba rallying the troops with, "We are cancellin' the Apocalypse!", while "Atlantic Rim" has a dour Graham Greene talking about "buffalo butter". I think one riff they missed was, a la a Roddy McDowall in "Laserblast", focusing on Greene and saying, "Dear heavens, 'Dances with Wolves' was a long, long time ago."
Nice callback to "Idiot Control Now" when Jonah and all the 'bots try to duplicate the success of "Every Country Has a Monster". And the stinger was perfect.
Oh, by the way: according to IMDB, the official title of the movie is currently, "From the Sea". One wonders if Guillermo Del Toro sent a bunch of lawyer-filled Jaegers to the Asylum to discuss the matter.

Was this a Syfy movie? It had that "vibe" to it.
The episode was OK overall, but this episode kinda demonstrates a big problem with riffing more recent movies. I don't know if anyone had this issue, but for me there were moments where a character in the movie said something snarky, and for a moment I thought it was Jonah or the Bots saying it. Or vice versa, Jonah and the Bots would make a joke, and it sounded like it was coming from one of the characters in the film! Since both MST3K and the film ave the same high audio quality, this gets a little disorienting at times.
One thing that put a smile on my face was hearing all the "Metal Gear Solid" references.
I also had a good hearty laugh over the "Bring your kid to work Day" comment.

For the first time in the show's history, I think they finally found a movie that is too bad to riff. And I've always scoffed at people who said that. "Too bad to riff? There's no such thing!" Well, I was wrong. I gave up on this one after 20 minutes. It was just too stupid. And with all the non-stop camera cuts and explosions and what-not, it was genuinely painful to watch.
That said, I'm actually OK with the show doing this movie. It was worth the attempt, and obviously some people enjoyed it. But I'd say, please, no more movies like this.

Late to the party (I wasn’t active here the first time I watched it), but when I first watched this episode I found it to be incredibly lacking, however upon watching it again recently....I find it to not only be weak, but to be the worst episode of the modern era, and outright one of the worst episodes of MST3K ever. Not only was the movie itself a complete slog, but the riffing accompanying it was incredibly subpar. While I feel I’m kinder to the revival series than many, this episode was a real sour point for me!
