I just opened Netflix because I wanted to watch Hobgoblins (it was in the last batch of classic episodes), and imagine my surprise when I discovered that only “The Gauntlet” is available!
I presume this was a rights expiration issue but still, I was rather dismayed.
Anyone know when this happened?

I believe they announced on Twitter that the classic MST3K episodes would be going away. It's a bit of a shame that what they have is gone. But to be honest, Netflix was never really the ideal way to watch the show. Especially the ones from the new collection, where they cut out the commercial bumps. The selection was never that great either.

Rights haven't expired. Most of the classic eps on Netflix are now available on Shout's website, and Tubi, and Twitch, etc (though it seems Hobgoblins isn't one of them, but that may change soon).

Yeah, Netflix put of classic collection 1 on March 15, 2017, those were pulled down and classic collection 2 was put up March 15, 2018. Classic collection 3 went up March 15, 2019. So Netflix was paying for a year of classic episodes at a time. It seems they weren’t interested in a 4th classic collection without an ongoing series to help promote.

Many episodes are also available on YouTube. Recently, a fan has posted episodes that include the full commercial breaks, including for long-gone TFNWSRN shows like "Short Attention Span Theater" and "Dead Comics Society".

Also, a very generous user on archive.org posted a collection of EVERY episode of the classic series, including the KTMAs. I'm not sure if I should post the link here, but just searching MST3K on archive.org should bring it up.
