Okay, so, I was a huge, huge, huge fan of Wander Over Yonder a few years back, and this was after being a kind of middling-tier appreciator of The Powerpuff Girls when it was on back when I was in Middle School, so when I heard that Craig McCracken was creating a cartoon for Netflix I basically put it on my immediate "must watch" list.
Episode one, I kinda felt like it was rushed and a bit of a let-down, but I figured "Hey, it's the pilot, and it's good enough to earn two more episodes from me"
Episode two, I was also let down (though not as much). I liked where it was going and decided I could risk some more investment.
And then the third time was the charm...
Episode Three was a true "Weird Tales"-style science fiction story, showcasing the American southwest's desert, the search for crashed spaceships, grim prophecies of doom, animals mutated with psychic powers, and the heartwarming story of how a cat got its name. Episode three was the gold I was panning for, though I could definitely see it not clicking for other people.
And then Episode Four was nice! The fourth episode firmly established the show's status quo, and was probably the final "Scene Setter" episode that the final six episodes required.
And then the last six episodes were great cartoony fun, playing in the established playground.
I absolutely loved this show (barring the first two episodes) and I'm kind of stunned that I'm not seeing anyone talk about it. There's a review here, a big name animator singing its praises on Twitter there, but for the most part this show just did a swan dive that was beautiful to watch without making more than a ripple, much less the splash I'd like to see it getting.
So, uh... am I just crazy to like this? I feel like the world as a whole is giving this a pass, and after the premature cancellation of Wander Over Yonder I'm starting to get some deja vu right outta the gate for this thing.
