This oral history is somehow more informative than the making-of doc on the Shout release of the movie. For example I never knew the movie they wanted to do with Paramount was When Worlds Collide, or the level of Frank's involvement. Or the actual specifics of the original "big" plot just beyond the mad scientist convention.

It's nice to hear from Bridget, Mary Jo, and Frank. You don't often get their perspectives on the movie.

There are some missing bits to this, like how the original idea for the movie was to do it with HBO back in 1991, but its very thorough otherwise.
All in all, they probably should've either gone independent (like Joel had wanted to do before he left), or sacrificed creative control and signed the big budget contract with Paramount in 1992. Waiting for Universal for 2 years only to get stiffed on the budget, movie choice, creative control and ultimately the release just resulted in the worst of case scenario all around. The fact that the Movie is good at all is a minor miracle.

Very good article. But I'm waiting for a big coffee table book "The Making of MST3K-TM" by J.W. Rinzler, just like the ones he did for the "Star Wars" OT and the first two "Alien" movies. Lots of illustrations, heavily researched, excerpts from all the script drafts, heavier than the laptop I'm using right now...
