Yeah,Its hard for me to watch Pod People and Mitchell. Another one that I feel is over-rated is Jack Frost. WOW....Pod People and Mitchell are, for me, two of those "watch any time over and over " eps! Different strokes as they say! I think that Tormented is over rated.

I will add my peas to the pod here and say Catalina Caper is certainly overrated. I only watched it once and it has never seen my VHS player since. Sidehackers I have seen twice and the film, to me, just peters out half-way through, after they torture his girlfriend. I do like that the head villain played a Klingon "The Trouble with Tribbles"!! "Pod People" was one of the 1st eps I remember seeing and I really enjoyed it, but now it seems to take forever to get going, but it still has MANY winning riffs. That Merlin episode I also found quite flat, but maybe I should give it another go. Gotta agree on Hamlet - dull, dull, dull. I saw Sword and The Dragon for the 1st time this weekend and again, my hopes must have been too high. Some funny stuff, but in the last third I was almost dozing - what's wrong with me?! G vz Zilla is a fun movie on its own, so even when the riffs are weak I am enjoying the movie itself!

Let's see, Monster A Go Go has got to be the rock bottom worst episode for me. Nothing could help that Herschal Gordon Lewis catastrophe, not even the riffs. (I think he bought the footage from some guy he knew and filmed just enough filler to make it yell a story!) Watching it was pure pain.

I find Mitchell to be very overrated. It is required viewing for any MSTie(Because of Joel's departure)but I don't think it was as funny as most people claimed. Also Final Sacrifice is somewhat overrated to me. Its a good episode but I wouldn't say its great.

I thought the same thing not to long ago.But I decided to give it another try. I enjoyed it a little more this time then the last time I watched it.The riffs are good considering what they had to work with.

I liked Mike when he was new to the show. He was full of energy and didnt let the bad movies bother him. Then, as he went down the line, his character seemed to get more depressed and more sarcastic. I guess being trapped on a Space Station and watching bad movies can do that to you. I haven't seen a lot of the MST3K episodes, when I see more I'll if I find one that is overrated.

Sidehackers. It is pretty good but after reading Don's and Forrests reviews I'd say it's over-rated. I remembered it very fondly from years ago but after watching it twice in the last few months I'm not that impressed. It starts off good but the last third or so really slowed down. Good early ep but not great. Agreed. Funny in parts, but mostly the movie is so repulsive it's hard to laugh. Without J&tB's commentary for the sidehacking, I can't really get much enjoyment out of it. Catalina Caper...don't get into it much. I think people just really dig "Creepy Girl" because otherwise it's an average episode IMO. I liked the MAGG ep...but maybe I just have high tolerance. I think the riffing is good enough to make it worthwhile because of just how hilariously inept the movie is. Agreed and disagreed, in that order. I find Final Justice the more entertaining of the JDB eps, but FS has the great riffing, goofy characters, the Canadian mocking, Sartoris...can't consider it less than an A.

I was going to post some eps that I (currently) think are overrated, but, heck, everyone has probably read my reviews, so instead I will post one thing I did learn by watching all of the (cable) episodes...
...it all depends on the genre.
Because I think if the movie in a genre you're a fan of, usually you'll like the episode.
For me, I like Japanese Monster Movies, '50s Sci-Fi, '50s Monster Movies, '70s Detective Movies, '60s/'70s Spy Movies (love early Bond films). So it's no wonder that episodes with movies of these genres tended to be my favorites. And I'm not much a fan of '80s-era movies, so those eps in general tended to fare worse for me.
It's not an absolute rule, but I think it tends to hold true.

But I'm not a fan of most of these types of movie. When people say that they like "Zilla vs Megs" because it's silly... well that means little to me. I don't watch the show for the movie, I watch it for the guys in the seats making comments.
I don't care for sword and sorcery flicks, but I love "Cave Dweller" and 'Deathstalker" because of the humor. Yes, Strange Creatures and Red Zone Cuba are unwatchable flicks, but they get lower grades because they give me low laughs. I also think Monster A-Go-Go is an unwatchable flick, but it earns a high grade because it strikes my funny bone a lot. And I think "Hobgoblins" is a wretched pile of filth, but it gets a B+ because of the quality of the jokes.
I don't discont what you say entirely Don. "Sword and the Dragon" is a movie I have fun watching as well as laughing at. And your probably right for most people because we hear folks talk about the "actual" movie all the time.
But for me, it's all about how hard I laugh and that's it. (an example of a movie I geta kick out of is "The Corpse Vanishes". there something campy and fun about to me. But it still gets a C- because it's not a laugh riot riff wise)
Dear God! No wonder no one agrees with my reviews. I'm the ultimate misfit! Ahhhh!

I watch the show for the jokes, not the movie. Of course, if the movie is painfully unwatchable (like Manos, or Monster a Go-Go) then I simply can't enjoy the show. It has to be REALLY painful though. The Coleman flicks are not painful enough for me, so that means the vast majority are a good watch. I also agree with you to a certain extent, Don. While pretty much ALL genres are watchable, I tend to enjoy the sword-and-sorcery, 80's space/sci-fi, and odd other genres (like The Skydivers, and The Starfighters) more than the rest.

When I first got into MST3k it was during the Mike Sci-Fi years. After the show was cancelled, I needed to seek out earlier episodes to get my fix. So I hunted down what people called the best of the Joel episodes, Manos and Mitchell. Well, I had to say, I thought Joel sucked. This was the best he had to offer?
Of course, then I saw, Pod People, Time of the Apes, Godzilla vs. Megalon, I Accue my Parents and on and on and now think he's great. But my point is, I think those two episodes are very overrated. Manos is okay, a lot of funny parts but I don't think it's THAT great. And Mitchell, maybe it's mostly remembered for it's emotional impact, which I also think you have to have been into MST3k ten years ago to fully appreciate. For me, having found the show when Mike was host, I always knew Joel had come and gone so it didn't hit me as hard. Anyway, as far as theater stuff goes, I find Mitchell very weak. I have a special spot in my heart for cheesier fare, and Mitchell is just a bland 70's cop tv movie to me.
