Yeah, Plan 9 would've been a cop out. Sure they can riff on it, but who can't riff on it?

Yeah, but can't you say that about "Godzilla vs Megalon"? it's well known and it's easy.
For one that is not as well know but equally as easy "Werewolf". Murph called it a gift from God. The riffs just fall into your lap.
I really don't care if they did "Plan 9" or not, I'm here only for the laughs. And "Robot Monster" easy, obvious or not, was a funny episode. I'll take it and thank the comedy Gods for it. If they did "Plan 9" and it was hysterical that's all that would have mattered to me.

One thing about Plan 9 that would've made it difficult is because of audience reaction to how easy it is.
I mean, let's think about this. If they do it in the later seasons, people would just say "Oh, why didn't they do this one earlier? IT would've been so obvious."
But in the earlier seasons, they might've said, "Oh, Plan 9. Come on, these people aren't even *trying* to find bad movies."
But yeah, if it had been a hilarious episode I would've been happy.

I bought Plan 9 on DVD a few years ago to have "the worst movie ever" in my collection. I waited til it was dark, got all my food and drink situated around me, curled up on the couch with a blanket and pushed play. Of course it was bad, but I don't think it is the worst ever, MST most certainly did worse. I found it sort of like watching Hairspray, a parade of extremely odd individuals (and pathetic sets and props). Not good, but not the worst ever. Then later I got rid of it. As for MST, I don't buy their explanation as stated above. There were plenty of other movies featuring narration. The Creeping Terror? Beast of Yucca Flats? Other things to consider would be availability of rights, running time, fitting it into a season schedule. Maybe it would have been easy to riff on, but would it have been really funny? If they did it wrong, people would never forget it either. Kinda like the movie being taken out of their hands and with a movie they didn't really want, sure it has its moments but who doesn't think there could have been a different movie, or funnier riffs? It was probably just way too well known to take the risk on.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there, Interociter.
