Has anyone else ever been watching a MST3K episode and exclaimed, "I KNOW THAT PLACE!"? Have any MSTed movies been filmed near you? I was shocked to find that one had. On the IMDb, ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE is listed as being filmed in Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue, which is at the end of Montreal island. I went to John Abbott College in Ste Annes and am quite familiar with the area as I knew people out there and bought most of my jokey smokey out there. It's a small town, the college takes up 90% of its land mass (slight exaggeration) and it had me wondering why anyone would film anything there. There is no reason...except that most of the houses are very old (as are the residents). And sure enough, that seems to have been the impetus for their filming there-the opening softball game set in the 50s (despite the fact that you see several modern school buses in the background and a modern car parked in a driveway as they walk through the village before the girl gets attacked).
Here's a map of Ste Annes
You can see how small a town it is, there are like 10 interlocking streets. Curiously unlabelled, John Abbott is located in that area East of Maple where there appear to be no streets. MSTies with good memories might recognize "Parc Harpell" as the park we first see the grown up Tony Washington (Jon Mikl Thor) playing baseball. If you remember, Servo questions why the sign is backwards and suggests it should read "Harpell Park" (well, everything is like that in Quebec...that whole French thing). Anyway, I took the train in for my first semester and I'd get off and cut through Harpell Park everyday.
Ste Annes isn't far from my house (I've walked there), but I knew prior to my watching that it was filmed there...it was what was coming that shocked me.
I started freaking when Thor went to get groceries for his mom. The dépanneur (a 'dep' is a corner or convenience store 7-11, Circle K etc.) he walked into was oddly familiar yet looked nothing like any of the deps in Ste Annes. I started thinking, "Man, I think that might be Laviolette's" but I wasn't sure..., the movie is almost 20 years old and things have changed (most of those products seen on the shelves no longer exist and they've moved the register and counter against the wall instead of being in front of the windows). But when he chases the thugs out I was floored that unmistakable white brick, the in and out doors and the ADDRESS-14! And then he takes his groceries and starts walking across the street and clear as day, I see the sign for the Valois Bay Garage glowing. It has a very distinct sign and the same one is being used today. The garage is next door to Laviolette's.
Anyway, I shop at Laviolette's every day and know the owners (though they got that guy with a bad italian accent as the owner in the film, since I was a kid it's always been run by Korean families). It's a 3 minute walk from my house.
This should give you idea
Laviolette's
my house
That big patch of green that is directly behind Laviolette's, labelled VALOIS PARK is the park where I played soccer as a kid. After the games, my friend and I would walk over and get popsicles at the dep. Probably around the same time as when ZOMBIE NIGHTMARE was filmed. I can't believe Jon Mikl Thor and Tia Carrere have been on Valois Bay. The part of Pointe-Claire I live in is called VALOIS, I went to Valois Park Elementary School...I buy my booze at Laviolette's just like Thor!
I should borrow my sister's digital camera and put some pics up.
