Well, I'm drunk, and I;ve just finished watching "The Meaning of Life" and, for some odd reason, I've come up with this idea:
Let's start with one episode, and list all of the riffs in the movie (none of the host segments) and in doing so, try to do this:
1) Identify the riff, and how it fits into the movie 2) If it is obscure, identify where the riff comes from 3) If it relates to a previous, or future, MST3K episode, mention that episode
This would be sort've like a really really really really really really really really really really really huge index of riffs.
Or, I could go back to the booze.

Some guy, who isn't drunk, is actually doing this. He has an entire website apparently devoted to it. There was a post 3 or 4 months ago on the sci-fi bb about it wondering if anybody was interested. There wasn't much response, tho I admit, I still think about it from time to time. But not enough to go back and look for the address.

For a while, I considered doing a sort of unofficial MST riff reference book, explaining each and every joke (well, the jokes that needed explaining) from each and every episode. I'd still love to do it, but it would really take forever... Perhaps if I was serving 25 to life for murder I might consider taking it on, but I certainly don't have time at the moment. Maybe someday.

One one hand:
A really ambitious idea that requires serious thought and dedication.
On the other hand:
You can't deny the power of Sweet, Sweet Booze!

Let's do it!!! Let's take a poll of all those interested and get right on it. And let's make being under the influence of sweet, sweet, booze be an option cause, hell, I know I'd partake. Maybe we can even get a new section on the board for just that. I am a mod, maybe I can use my semi-power for that.
I think it's a cool idea and I'm behind it 100%.

I shouldn't drink but you can count me in.
And I'll help with the Riff Project, too. (ba-dum-dum-tsh!)

I've always found it bizarre that there is no page of riff origins...I think it is a really great idea and that we should do it.
Should we come up with an standard format? Probably... but for now I'm going to try and do an episode now. And see what y'all think. I am not going to list EVERY single riff...just the obscure ones-I really don't think people need explanations for fart noises when people sit down or all the belches and grunts from Joe Don Baker or "kill him, kill him, kill him, kill him..." in Outlaw while that loser keeps rambling on with "Cabot, Cabot wait up! Cabot"
But like obscure and semi-obscure ones should definitely be listed. As the Best Brains crew has said on many occassions, even they do not 'get' every single riff in an episode-that someone would suggest a line, and everyone else would stare and shrug, "Is it funny?" "I think it is" "Okay, we'll put it in.". That's what made the show so solid, that there were so many people, with different educations, backgrounds, experiences contributing to one viewing experience...I like to think I get most of the jokes, but some are WHOOSH over my head...usually age-related ones (I'm only 25) or USA-related ones (I'm Canadian) or sports-related ones... politics, history, film, art, philosophy, literature are safe bets for me...but some just don't register. Often when they say someone looks like someone I have to look them up in a Google image search (I've LEARNED a lot watching this show too)...like Larry Csonka (yeah, I had a hard time getting the name right).
But I really do think this is a great idea...I think links and related info would be a good idea too, making this a learning tool for all instead of just some anal-retentive nerdlinger obsessive-compulsive thing.
Here's an example from a post I wrote the other day concerning FINAL SACRIFICE that is very much in the same vein:

That's exactly what I was thinking about, Rowsdower!
Obscure riffs, or riffs people just don't "get"

I don't think the Red Green thing was at all obscure, but then I'm from Iowa and Red Green has been one of the most popular things on PBS here for years. In fact, Red Green folks usually are here once a year in the summer and thousands of people come to see them. When watching Final Sacrifice I kept thinking why HAVEN'T they done a Red Green joke? This guy sounds just like him! But maybe it's because I'm from the upper midwest and it's well known here. Maybe in other parts of the country they haven't heard of it.
