Now, I love sick/irreverent humor probably more than the average person, and MST3K is among the most gentle example of the "biting" humor out there, but sometimes I think that their jokes about extremely serious subject matters are almost going to far, and I can't really find them funny. Examples: the short "The Days of Our Years." I can never watch this one, because I can't even find the 'bots' jokes about such tragedies funny. Ditto with the scene in "Signs of Life" when the Tony Cardoza-lookalike is killed by the train. And being an animal-lover, I always fast-forward through the scene in "Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders" when the poor little dog asphyxiates in the garage. Anyone else sometimes feel this way?

No
Well some of the Hitler jokes don't always make me happy (depending on the context, but we've been through that conversation).
I'm pretty thick skined so for the most part, no. I though the "Days of our Years" was hysterical and I LOOOOVE cats and didn't like that scene in Merlin. But I realise it's only a movie, no real cats were hurt and the SOB got his just deserts in the end.#nosmileys

When I go back and watch old episodes, it's amazing how many people they make fun of or make reference to that have since passed away. Of course, these gags weren't "inappropiate" at the time, but now I cringe a little. I just watched "Last Clear Chance" a few nights ago and still find it hilarious.
WHY DON'T THEY LOOK, RALPH? TELL ME. WHY DON'T THEY LOOK?

Another vote for the dog scene in "Merlin". I love dogs, and even though I know it's just a movie, I can't bring myself to laugh at that.

Oh come on, "Crispy's" a good name for a dog!
Sorry... but the guys didn't make "lets burn the dog" jokes, in fact many of their riffs involved being repulsed by the ugly tone of the movie and condeming these terrible stories being told to a child.

The only inappropriate gag I know of was at the end of "Pod People". OK, the film is crappy, but I thought it was sad that they left poor Trumpy, who didn't kill anybody, in the woods. Tom's fake crying and the "I laughed with monsters..." song certainly didn't help...
Oh, this is my first post! Hello.

I wouldn't call them doing Days of Our Years innapropriate, the short is just way too bleak. Plus these "tragedies" as you put it were caused by the characters own stupidity. Just like my personal favorite short, Last Clear Chance. "Never under any cicumstances drive with your buttcheeks."

Stupidity or not, they are still tragedies, and I don't think joking about them is funny.

But calling their riffs inappropriate is the same as calling their riffs inappropriate when.....oh say Lisa's death in Time Chasers. Face it, the short was dark, depressing, and was only made as a way to shove "Saftey First" into our faces. MST3K material.

MST has NEVER offended me. Even the Hitler jokes weren't offending, becuase they NEVER praise Hitler. Hitler is even #2 (next to Satan) on Mike's most dispised list. The Hitler Building gag for example is hialrious. Your right Forrest. Let me clairify, it's more that I don't really laugh when they do the Master Race jokes or do German accent and say something about the Furer. It's just a running gag I've never cared for and sometimes they toss it out even when it doesn't fit and wish they wouldn't do so much. But during "Wild horses" their was this cowboy in the movie who held his arm out like the Nazis did, and one of them says "Howdie Hitler". That made me laugh because it fit. And the Hitler building is funny because it doesn't fit in the movie.

If they were riffing a live news cast, "Ha, those soldiers died! Homeless people froze to death last night, jerks!" etc. that would be super offensive to nearly everyone. I don't find any of the things originally mentioned offensive, because I see it more as commentary on how the short (and I'm thinking of that Signs of Life short here) was poorly written and executed. Wasn't the whole point to observe and heed safety posters anyway? Because that was NEVER made clear. It was a guy driving too fast in a truck, a guy having a heart attack (like he could help that!) and an excited father. And only the father might possibly have been in a place where signs were posted about him. Besides, sometimes, just to get through all the insanity in life, you have to joke and laugh.

I'm with you all the way. I think the biggest reason of why anti-white jokes don't work on MST, is becuase they're delivered by white guys. But the white guys they are delivered by are not the WASP-y, stuck-up, stereotypical white people. They are not anti-white jokes, they are anti-rich, famous, and racist white jokes. But that is just my humble, squishable opinion.
