I recently tried to introduce my cousin to MST3K. He is a funny guy and we both share many laughs. I bought him MICTHELL for Christmas. He watched it and did not get it.
He said there were a few chuckles but that was it. He hated the host segments.
I was pissed and confused.
I am baffled by folks for whom the show does not click. I notice that real MSTies had an instant reaction to the show. I myself was hooked from the first joke way back in 1990.
Some just don't get it. Have any of you had failed conversion attempts?
Any theories as to why they don't?
My suspicion is that people who refuse to grow up (like me!) "get it" and find a comfort factor in the show- like hanging with buddies.

Some people just don't get it and others just don't find the jokes funny. Most of the time, it's just a case of people not getting it. That's the only type of people that I've ran into. Most of the people just don't get the jokes, no matter how good a sense of humor they have. You have to have a lot of pop culture knowledge to really enjoy the show I believe.

I've also found that you need a decent attention span to really enjoy MST. It's a show that rewards you for paying attention. Folks who would rather "check out" mentally when they watch something are going to get bored. Unfortunately, that's most people.

The show is a throwback to pre MTV hyper editing for attention deficit imbeciles.

It seems to matter on personality. People who love film, seem to love MST. Becuase for some reason, people who enjoy good movies, like MST3K. However, people that don't like to see movies, seem to hate. And people who watch uncut bad movies (aka 2 Fast 2 Furious) dont seem to get the show either. My cousin and I both love good movies. I introduced the show to him, and he loved it. Poe, I suggest using a newer episode of MST3K to your cousin. Even I admit that I thought Mitchell was only OKAY on a first viewing, but it grew on me. The show has always been great, but to a newcomer, I'd show them an ep from season 7 or the Sci-Fi years. Not a slam against Joel or early Mike eps, but the humor is less obscure in the Sci-Fi years. Still, for some reason, when I rented Pod People, and I ahdn't seen it since I was only a kid when it aired, I laughed my ass off on first sight...so who knows. My loves good movies. We made films together and he now reviews movies for a living. I will try to get him to watch another.

I probably have the shortest attention span you can find, and I love the show.... ........................oh! A button!

I actually have Attention Deficit Disorder, and I had no trouble watching from the first time I saw the show. I tried to get my sister to watch it with me, because we have the same tastes in humor. She doesn't like it just because she doesn't like watching bad movies. She will watch "Girl In Gold Boots" in bits and pieces, though. Probably because allthough it's bad, it's reasonably watchable. And she laughed pretty hard at Mike beating Crow over the head with the golf clubs during "Screaming Skull".

People have different style of humor that they enjoy. My nephew likes slap stick, he loves the 3-Stooges. I can't stand the Stooges, watching folks poking one another in the eyes isn't what makes me laugh.
But I've always like mocking or manipulation of media. "Dream On" when it started I laughed at because of the film clips they'd throw in there. "Mad Movies" was another show that I loved. MST3K is my style. My sister was the one who introduced me to the show and she flat out said "This is a slam dunk, guaranteed you'll love it" and when she discribed it I knew she was right.
But just having a sense of humor isn't enough. My dad has a sense of humor but he doesn't laugh at MST. You know, he grew up laughing at Gleason and Red Skelton and this just wasn't his style.

You have to be a critic to like MST3K, but most people aren't.

MST3K is my style. Ever watch "Whose Line Is It Anyway"? It's a great show, but one of my favorite games was always Film Dub, where they take the sound away from a bad old movie clip and improvise their own dialogue. I later found out that one of the clips they used was from "The Brain That Wouldn't Die", and just this last season, they used a clip from "Once Upon A Honeymoon".

I went from non mstie to mstie. it only took about 6 years.
I first saw MST3K back in 1991, when I was watching C-Band Satellite at my grandmas house. I was 12 at the time, and I definitly "got it", but I did not really find it hilarious or anything. I was already a fan of "mad movies" (mostly for the fart jokes, im sure),
About 4 or 5 years later, my local network affiliate had MST3K on syndication. Every Saturday at midnight. I would come home from a night of typical highschool weekend shenanigans, and for some reason, MST was just what the doctor ordered. I would sack out in bed, and watch it all the way to the end. Its run was short lived however, and I watched 10 episodes at the most.
Then in 1996, I rented the movie on VHS when it came out. Again, I found it it good, and occasionaly pretty funny.
Then, in about mid 1997, I watched JACK FROST at friends house. Im not sure what happened, but it suddenly hit me, "this is the funniest thing I have ever seen." I caught the next few epsiodes, RIDING WITH DEATH, and PRINCE OF SPACE. I found myself laughing non stop. Then came..... SPACE MUTINY. I was peeing my pants all the way throuh it, but when the scene came where Dave Ryder was yelling "whaaa!" and "woo!!" as he ran down the stairs, followed by tom mike and crow imitating him, I lost it. I was on the floor, gasping for air. I still think its the funniest thing I have ever seen or heard.
I went back and watched all the old episodes I missed, and i loved them all.
