I know that Joel isn't usually known for laughing much in the theater, but I just finished watching "Attack of the Giant Leeches" and I must say he laughs quite a bit. It's really unusual to hear him laugh so much in the theater, but it adds a lot to the episode. Makes me wish he did it more often.

I like enjoy spotting Joel laughing too, but I think he suppressed it more than Mike because it would kind of betray the "character" of Joel Robinson; paternal, aloof, sleepy-eyed etc. I mean, it's been talked about in other threads that Mike was, more or less, on the same ground as the Bots...just another one of the guys (so, it makes more sense for them to crack him up)...regardless, I bet they both tried to keep it in as much as possible.
Anyway, I agree that it is RARE to hear Joel laugh naturally on the show...he is quite shy. More often he simply cracks a big grin during the sillier host segments and tries to suppress the laughter (I think Kevin had a major effect on Joel's ability to keep his cool facade). In the theatre though, you can often hear it in his voice that he's finding whatever is being said or going on, funny.
This is kind of a crappy post...

You know, he's often said that he's not an actor. So maybe it's a case of him concentrating on his lines focusing on that area. Whereas Mike it perhaps came a bit more naturally and he could relax and let the laughs fly without losing his place.
I dunno, it's speculation. But Joel did laugh a lot more during KTMA and the first season. As the show tightened up writing wise, he seemed to do less laughing.

Joel laughs quietly, so you have to listen closely for it. He seemed to laugh more in the host segments though.
