I've never been a big fan of the truly 'inept' eps. Manos, Red Zone Cuba, The Creeping Terror, etc. I just have a hard time getting past the pain the movie brings on, even with the help of the Best Brains. I don't think Manos is bad by any means and it definately deserves it's place in MST lore. I just don't think it's top 10 material in terms of the funny. I think that because the movie is so bad, we feel more sympathy with Joel and the Bots. Their quips become our own, because we have the same rage at that movie. Thats my Pyschobabble exlanation.

Apparently, Nunyerbiz subscribes to the the phantom rule.
For all of you new folks, here's the definition:
The Phantom Rule: One's enjoyment of the movie may affect one's enjoyment of the episode.
This is sufficiently vague that it comes in handy in these types of discussions.

No, that's wrong. I'm often misquoted. I have even misquoted myself. Here it is: One's reaction to the movie can affect one's opinion of the episode. The differences may seem subtle but they are important. I think I have sometimes started with "One's opinion to the movie" but that isn't right. Most everyone's opinion of Manos is that it's an incompetent movie but not everyone's reaction to it is the same. Some find it painfully unwatchable and others a hilarious mess. And the reaction to it can affect your acceptance of the humor. "Can" (or "May") is also and important word because I'm not saying that it's an absolute. But I have seen over and over someone's opinion of an episode depend on a description of the movie. But really the only one who has argued this point in detail is MightyJack and even the Mighty One succumbs to it in 812 - Incredibly Strange Creatures...

I would agree to a point with the "Phantom Rule" as defined above. Just for the record, I think the MST treatment of Manos deserves it's place as a landmark episode. I don't think it's because of the comedy value, per se. I think it's more just based on the accomplishment of somewhat redeeming the seemingly unredeemable. The fact that they got as many laughs as they did out of that movie is really something to be admired. I just don't think it ranks very high on the overall laugh-o-meter in comparison to their best work. As far as some of the other truly 'inept' episodes, I think my lack of enjoyement with them is based more with the impression that the Brains themselves just didn't have fun making them. It seems that I have less fun with the eps where the Mads actually come close to driving the SOL Crew insane. I think the show works better when everybody is having fun as opposed to just throwing nothing but spite at the features.

Am i bold enough to ask why is Manos everyones favorite episode? sorry. be gental. I've always figured a big part of its fame - and yeah it's obviously an exceptionally terrible film and also a fairly decent episode - was owed to its place as the #1 fan-voted (I'm fairly certain it was fan-voted and fairly-certain it took the top spot, anyway) MST3K episode when Comedy Central ran its Summer countdown of the best 100 episodes. I remember they ran one episode every day throughout the summer. Now I cannot remember where any of the episodes were placed other than Manos at the top. It's perhaps safe to guess that this countdown aired in either the Summer 1995 (following end of Season 6 on March 25th) or 1996 (following end of Season 7 on May 18th). I searched for this countdown but came up empty, which is hard to believe. I'm sure it's gotta be out there somewhere. Anyway, these lists tend to have influence on opinion even if the fan vote wasnt all that wide spread. I'd love to see the fan vote numbers/results for each episode, even the ones that didnt make the cut but that's entirely unlikely; who would think to keep, preserve such a thing?

Mega-bump!
And the countdown was Summer 95. I have a tape of the Manos episode in question from late September when it aired as #1.

I saw Manos the night it first aired. My jaw was already on the floor by the first break. I'm used to the movie now, but in January 1993, it was mind-boggling. Where did they find this movie? What I've never understood was the love for Space Mutiny.

What I've never understood was the love for Space Mutiny. Obviously the name thing took off but even if you remove that bit the rest of the episode, and moreso the movie itself, is just so damned cornball and funny. I think for anybody who grew up in the 80s and lived through the various Star Wars rip-offs can appreciate the cheese of Space Mutiny as the finest among all those offerings. I would add that to an extent Hobgoblins does the same for Gremlins. These episodes are both the bottom-of-the-barrel wrt copy cat attempts. I think I mentioned this in another thread but these obvious rip-offs come with the significant, built-in context of the originals they emulate. In my opinion it adds to the enjoyment of the movie itself and the riffs that come along with it include those added undertones. The result is a movie and episode that starts off on 2nd base, and it only goes up from there on the efforts of the writers who imo came through for Space Mutiny and other rip-offs like Warrior of the Lost World, Time of the Apes, Cave Dwellers, Master Ninjas, Time Chasers, etc

Damn, a bump of over 14 years. That's gotta be close to a record.

Manos was a very early ep for me when I started watching and I liked it from the get-go. I didn't know of the fan base or that it was considered a classic with said base, I just know I laughed a LOT. At the movie itself, and the riffing. Now that I know it so well, it can drag in spots, but I still enjoy it after I've had some distance between viewings. (It's the same for all the episodes I like).
Just from the opening scene where they're all giving an exasperated, "MANOS.", during that never-ending driving scene, ("NO! Now they're going back the other way!", "Sure, they dissolve to the same scene.", "Boy, this is a taut thriller, huh?") I knew I was hooked (to the episode AND the show, as I've said this was one of the first ones I'd seen). I liked the host segments as well.
And, who can forget the stirring conclusion to HIRED! ? ("TEN CARS?!").

I just don't think Space Mutiny is funny. It's an average 80s direct to video sci-fi flick whose worst crime is bad editing. Great cast, though.

I like it well enough but it's barely in my Top 30, and I'm reconsidering its place there. Now the one episode I don't quite get the love for is 910 The Final Sacrifice. I've made myself watch it a couple of times in attempt to crack that code but it never happens for me. Never really laughed at it and I can't even say it's an average episode.
