I have just finished reading Death Rat and Mind Over Matters by Mike. Good Lord, are they funny as hell!! There were certain parts of both books that almost caused me to urinate myself. I have been an MST3K fan since the beginning and was saddened terribly when I learned that they would be no more. I was glad to see that Mike kept up the crazy humor. Has anyone here read any of his stuff? There's also one called Mike Nelson's Mega Moviecheese, but I haven't got to that one yet.

I love Mike's books. Megacheese is still my favorite, I don't think a book has ever made me laugh harder.

100% agreement here, Mike's books are funny!
Death Rat is probably my favorite, then Mind over Matters and finally MovieMegaCheese-all three are great though and are definitely worth the money-
They're even funnier if you live in MN.

Megacheese is the best book ever!
I'm halfway through Mind Over Matters. Funny, but nowhere near Movie Megacheese.
Haven't started on Death Rat.

Megacheese is the best book ever! Haven't started on Death Rat. Death Rat is right up there with A Confederacy of Dunces. It is by far one of the funniest books I have ever read. I wasn't kidding when I said I almost wet myself while reading it. I suggest reading it with a spare pare of skivvies and a pair of pants at the ready.

LOL, yeah, they are all pretty damn funny.
I love the way he writes, especially in one of the essays in "Mind Over Matters". That story about the wasps is probably one of the funniest things i've ever read.
"Lets's not get into who stepped on whom, or who parked a running tractor above whose nest in the earth. I think I could reason-ably ask of any wasp, "What the hell are you doing putting your home in the ground? What are you, a hobbit?"
"And it wasn't as if I was rototilling their home, I was just standing there above it. What kind of world would it be if, every time a wasp flew near my home I came running out and directed a thick stream of DDT directly at it?"
I love the way he writes. He goes into extreme detail about the dumbest little things, and uses harsh sarcasm on the things that bother him. Great stuff.

I finnally got around to reading Michael J. Nelson's first novel, Death Rat!, and I have to say bravo. I'm definatly looking forward to your next book, Mike. Novel or Essays.
I can't really compare this to Mike's other two books, because this is an actuall novel and not a bunch of collected essays, but it was well worth the read. The story was really good and really really funny. Mike get's some great lines worked into it.
"Beauty lies in the eyes of the BEERHOLDER!"
"His pants touched me. It was horrible."
"Meh......Meh......Milord Nasty Pants?"
There are some great characters, but the most notable would have to be King Leo. He is a cross between Little Richard, Michael Jackson, and Chris Tucker. As horrible a person this would be to meet, much of what he does in the book is priceless.
If I had to complain about something, I guess as out-there as it was, I was actually expecting something a little more........you know......out-there. There's some parts that just come off like it's just another novel. But then again, it is a novel. But it's written by Mike Nelson. So it's not really "just another" anything except a peek at this crazy world he writes down on paper.
If you're a Mike Nelson fan, pick this book up now! If you just love to laugh and never heard of Nelson, pick this book up now! Or check out his essay books, Movie Megacheese and Mind Over Matters.
Keep these books coming, Mike. I got plenty of room on my shelf.

I think the reason for why it seems like just a standard novel at times is that's what Mike wanted.
I mean, if you look over his work, it's got all of the classic elements of great literature. The story is a hilarious one, but the way the book is set up makes it serious. The result is that you wind up with a genuinely funny piece of work that isn't just "lame comedic fluff."
Like the part where SPOILER! Gus Bromstad has that dream about the rat. As soon as I saw that I thought "foreshadowing!" And sure enough, later on....END SPOILER!
