Well, it's that time of year again: the quarterly Hollywood Collectors' Show in Burbank, CA. Oh man, this one was good...probably better than the last one in October. I just got home and here's what I came out with.
Mickey Jones (bit part as Hog in The Master: "State Of The Union" in Master Ninja II)
He is one of those character actors who I've seen everywhere (from Slingblade to that breath freshener commerical with the old lady on the subway) but I never could put a name to his face until maybe a year ago. It wasn't until recently that I realized that he was the drummer behind Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man" and The First Edition's "I Just Dropped In To See What Condition My Condition Is In" (amongst their other songs). Anyhow, he's a real nice guy. I mentioned the episode to him. I didn't have the episode with me (gave it to that George Lazenby a****** last year, so it's probably in the trash by now), so I gave him the YouTube link to check out. The part where he comes in has some hillarious riffs: "Sounds like they went to the same speech class.", "It's Malcolm X! ('no it isn't!')", "He's starting up his hand"
Donna Martell (Col. Briteis in Project Moonbase)
Such a sweet lady. She gave me a very beautiful autographed picture, too. Her heyday as a coyboys-and-Indians 50s TV show character are not familiar to me, so I only know of her via PM. This seems to be the case for most people, even outside of the context of MST, it seems. Apparently proto-MST shows covered this in the 70s and 80s and the movie has become one of the most public TV broadcasted late night low-budget movies over the course of 55 years and counting. I know it's a staple among those public domain ~$2 DVDs you see at pharmacies and whatnot. Anyhow, I gave her a copy of #109 (she has never heard about the show, amazingly). I'm going to try tracking down a copy of Last Train from Bombay. It looks like a fun movie. Check out an original Leech Woman poster in the background (being sold for $250?!?!)
France Nuyen (Tso-sing in Code Name: Diamond Head)
I finally got to meet one of my favorite actresses. From interviews I've read with her, she always struck me as someone with an off-setting personality. She was very nice to me...a little soft spoken, but still nice. She didn't hit me for mentioning other low-brow fare such as Dimension 5 or The Horror At 37,000 Feet, so that's good. It just goes to show you that you shouldn't believe everything you read. I gave her the episode (she's probably going to destroy her TV out of rage from the riffing! LOL! I hope she doesn't take it personally.) In return she gave me an autographed photo. By the way, she broke her wrist from a fall and had surgical pins inserted into her forearm. Because of that, I stressed that an autograph wasn't necessary if it puts her in excruciating pain, but I guess it didn't bother her.
Bert I. Gordon (Lots of stuff)
Nice guy. He didn't speak much, either. I remember someone else on the board met him and Susan and had a good conversation with them both. I gave him a Magic Sword ep and he appreciated it.
Ernest Borgnine
I started to pay attention to him as an actor after seeing BASEketball and, not to long after, seeing him at the supermarket by chance after my mom (who has probably gave some figure well into the quadruple digits to Tova, Inc. over the past couple of decades) pointed him out to me. This was a little before I really started getting into MST, so at the time, I didn't ask him about Merlin.... Anyhow, after expressing that he was a great actor in such movies as Bad Day At Blackrock and Vengeance Is Mine, his agent said jokingly, "Try finding something he was bad in!" (at first I thought he meant "bad" as in "bad-ass", which is fitting description for all of his characters)
EB: Well, BASEketball sucked! You actually thought that turkey was funny?
Me: Well, at the time I did. It's still good as far as actor cameos and immature humor goes.
EB: I don't think I did anything worse than that...
Me: Well, there was Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders...
EB: But I did that as a favor as a friend, so that was OK. Dumb, but it was a favor, so you know (there's your answer, McCloud), ...
I asked him about MST, but he didn't seem to think much of it: Sort of a, "Yeah, I heard about the show and episode, but I don't have enough of an interest to go out and buy the DVD set" kind of thing. Still, he has a bright personality and every one should be like him at age 91
Others I shook hands with and expressed fandom but didn't really engage in conversation or take any pictures: George Kennedy, Cynthia Myers (still hot!), Celeste Yarnall, Dick Van Patten ("hey, Abbott!!!!" "So how's Timothy doing?"), Gregg Palmer of the Rebel Set and other B-movie "horror", Kathleen Hughes and Karen Black (she seemed kind of disappointed that I didn't buy any DVDs that I already have)
Misc. pictures....
Probably the only photo in existence which involves both Monster-A-Go-Go and Carol Channing
