As an actor he really hadn't found his instrument.

We all make fun of Joe Don Baker and why not? It's easy. But the reality is in the right kind of role he's a serviceable character actor. He just wasn't meant to carry a movie. Or anything real heavy for too long.
Zing! (even while sticking up for him)

Man, How can he run around without his heart exploding. He must have a stunt double for walking, standing, running, talking- basically everything but the scenes where he eats porkchops smothered in mayonaisse.

I also liked the Chicago reference. Originally Chicago Transit Authority this band seemed to be playing Maynard Fergusun horn charts upside-down. One song, "Saturday in the Park", is especially loathsome. (I liked it when I was 16 however.)
Mobsters smiling, really laughing, a man selling heroin ...
