Is this worth seeing? I think it's almost heresy to remake a Romero zombie flick, but I see this has gotten good reviews.
Anyone from the group seen this flick and care to comment?

It's pretty decent. I give it 3 out of 4 stars. The story kind of runs out of gas at the end, but, the gore and carnage are worth the price of admission alone. Be warned though, prepare yourself for some gory, GORY times.

I saw the first one in '79....got me started on movies in general, and indepedent/weird movies in particular.
I probably couldn't sit through a Hollywood remake of this....must resist urge.....ok, if it's still showing next weekend I'll see it.

Theres only about onw scene that might make you feel woozy, but its a good remake. Praises the original and doesn't rip it off.
Besides it beat Passion it's third week, maybe it has something to do with the ressurection.

Let's see here:
-it's uber-violent -the dead are raised -it involves "eating the flesh" of humans. -it's controversial, and people love it or hate it.
Describes both "Dawn of the Dead" and "The Passion".
Coincidence? I think not.

Dawn of the dead isn't controversial! But yes, I want to see it.

There was a thread in CFM a couple weeks ago on this subject. Most people said it was good. I still haven't seen it, though.
As far as gore is concerned, I just saw Day of the Dead last week, the third in Romero's trilogy. That movie has the most graphic, realistic, extreme and disturbing gore I've ever seen. I doubt that this new movie has gore that tops it. It wouldn't be rated R otherwise.

Dawn of the dead isn't controversial! But yes, I want to see it. The new version is certainly controversial. Maybe not in its subject matter, but the issue of remaking it. The original version was quite controversial - most people had ever seen an unrated film released since the the MPAA. Also no one had seen chunks being bitten out of people's arms. ;-)

zombies ripping torsos clean off while the victim is still screaming is something extremely hard to top.

The weird thing is, I didn't really feel much emotion when I watched Day of the Dead. It was so extreme and graphic, but I didn't really feel scared or disturbed. However, I had a really bad dream that night and I woke up at dawn, feeling completely shaken and scared. Then I couldn't get the images out of my mind. That movie packed a wallop that didn't hit me until my "dreaming" mind was in control.
Whereas with movies that made me feel scared or disturbed while watching, they did not give me bad dreams, like The Exorcist III, The Changeling, and The Evil Dead. Strange.
The Ring made me feel deep fear while watching, and gave me nightmares, so I regard it very highly.

George Romero is a very hit-or-miss filmmaker. The one emotion that he did manage to tap into is a very primal fear that all mammals have - being eaten.
I find Night of the Living Dead extremely disturbing, even more so given how bland most movies of its day (1968) were.
The first Dawn of the Dead is more outrageous and funny than scary...but the idea of being chased by slow-moving predators that NEVER SLEEP AND WON'T STOP is very disturbing to me. The anticonsumer message in that film is extremely effective, which is what elevates it into a classic.
I'm told the new "Dawn" trashes the message in favor of gore/action, which to me makes the remake irrelevant.
I may or may not see it in the theater, but I'll certainly catch it on DVD.
-Alleged out.

You need to see it in theaters, it will not have the same affect on DVD. It is one of those movies that are need to be seen in theaters. Like I said before the remake pays homage to the older one.
