Joel's quote said "we hadn't cleared ALL the movies before we did the fundraiser." So they had at least three, and at most 12 cleared (but unlikely that high). I remember another interview (or maybe it was an update) where Christmas Dragon ended up being their second choice for a Christmas movie.

Are you sure about the second part? Because they announced Gamera, Demon Squad, and Robot Wars before the campaign ended. It's possible they started negotiating mid campaign once they had hit the initial goal, but it seems more likely they had those lined up already.

Why haven't Jonah or Patton tweeted about this? The big 'reason' is gone and there's still no promoting going on. At this point, I don't think the $4.8M can be reached. I don't think they'll cancel it. I wonder if they'll float the idea of doing 3 eps for $3.5M, which is still $350K over my projection, but would actually be achievable if people saw a reasonable goal and actually pushed for it during the TDay marathon. View AttachmentView AttachmentPatton posted on Instagram about it. But yes, it needs more promotion. I don't think they can add a lower level at this point. They would need to relaunch with the lower 3 episode goal.

Because Shout just has the rights to the films as they exist. To create a derivative work they need a new contract and new fees. It’s probably easier, since Shout already has a relationship with a licensee, but it’s not a given thing.
Shout could try baking MST3K rights into every contract, but a bit about “We reserve the right to make fun of your movie with a property we own” might not go over well with some studios/filmmakers.

yeah 2017 was the year of Season 11's release on Netflix. It would have been in their interest to NOT feature it that year anyway and have more people give the new episode views on Netflix. I strongly disagree with that. It would have been in their interest to feature a top episode from the new season for the marathon IMO. I agree that it would have been in the interest of MST3K to have a new Netflix episode on the 2017 Turkey Day marathon. Netflix didn't allow it. It wouldn't be in Netflix's interest, because they don't want to have people watching Netflix stuff outside of Netflix, especially during their period of exclusivity.

The difference here is the show was produced and then distributed through Netflix, they don’t own the IP. that doesn't matter. This is the same reason why they didn't show a Season 11 episode on the following Turkey day.. 'Netflix won't let us air it'. Netflix didn't own the IP but told Joel and team they couldn't show the episode on turkey day. They did show a season 11 episode the following Turkey Day. Cry Wilderness was the final movie of the 2018 Turkey Day.

Looks like its just Matt & 3 other writers. No Joel. No stars. Yikes. And there are only ~700 people watching. Not great. I switched between Twitch, YouTube and the Gizmoplex. Each had about 700-900 people. Not great, but put together it was better than only 700.

I don't post here much, but I kind of wish they would've started with six public domain episodes as the goal, and built up from there. I think there are enough PD movies out there they could've worked with and cut the cost for the initial pledges. I enjoy what The Mads are Back do, but the fact that they limit themselves to public domain films means an almost endless sea of grey, boring movies. And if you want a good print you're usually stuck with licensing that from people like the late Wade Williams.

Tim just popped up on the Discourse forum as well. I'm pretty sure the Felicia clip is old.

The Turkey Day Marathon is going to be two days, so it sounds like there will be a full court press at the end. Hopefully that makes up for things. www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaVnyl1ZeQQ

It looks like Patton deleted the Ghostbusters tweet. I assume someone reminded him he’s still on strike.

No one’s forgetting about movie rights, but why would we think MST3K is paying a significantly higher rate for movie rights? The overwhelming majority of Rifftrax at this point of VOD titles (which frankly, probably sell worse than their ‘just the jokes’ audio tracks). VODs sell significantly better than Just the Jokes releases for Rifftrax. They pretty much only do them as Kickstarter rewards these days, and when they raised the price a few years back it was stated it was due to the fact that they don't sell as well as VODs. If JTJ sold better than VODs, Rifftrax would certainly be putting their focus there. Why wouldn't they? It would be the same amount of work without having to worry about movie rights.

The whole SAG strike thing makes no sense. It's an excuse perpetuated directly from Joel. Oh god, we aren't doing this again. They can't do anything as long as the strike is in place. Actors can't talk one word of business to anybody whatsoever. Excuse? Excuse for what :b On the podcast How Did This Get Made, they do mini episodes where the hosts normally talk about things they're watching, and they've said that SAG rules won't even let them say something like "I've been streaming Columbo, people should really check it out." Instead they're essentially discussing books and music and stuff instead. So if 30+ year-old shows are verboten due to the strike, MST3K is as well.

Nate Begle speaks! He did an interview where he talked about leaving the show: youtu.be/Gp96TxjZ-yQ?t=3214His stated reasoning is new parenthood prevented him from returning to film more with the show.

For me, the big question/concern is – why does this series cost so much? A Rifftrax release is 80% of MST3K’s output, and I doubt a comparable number of Rifftrax offerings are anywhere close to the proposed cost of the season, so it’s not licensing (sorry justifiers on the official forum). I think Joel has lost track of the fact that the low budget of the original series wasn’t just part of its charm, it was vital to its financial solvency. In my view, the issues are the cost of the production of the host segments and the overhead of the business. Licensing for Rifftrax and MST3K is kind of apples and oranges. Rifftrax seems to license films for around three years at a time (I would have to look back at when certain rights have been lost to be certain). They also license things just for streaming rights, aside from a few titles that have gotten physical releases. None of the Netflix season 11 shows have been pulled yet, so the licensing agreement was for at least 6 years, and I would bet more like 10 years (We'll see once 2027 rolls round). A longer licensing timeframe means higher fees. Similarly, they're licensed for DVD/Blu ray releases in addition to streaming, which is another medium, which means additional fees.
