What time do you people get up in the morning? Why am I always the first one to see this stuff??? ;D
Anyway, from our good friends at Satellite News:
"You-know-what may have finally frozen over. TVGuide.com is reporting that Universal will be re-releasing Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie on DVD on May 8th. While we haven’t received confirmation of this ourselves, this news comes from our old friend David Lambert, TVGuide.com Content Contributor and News Director of TVShowsOnDVD.com, so we’re pretty confident of its accuracy.
The new DVD will once again be a bare-bones release, with only the original theatrical trailer thrown in as an extra. But it’s reported that the movie itself will be a new anamorphic widescreen transfer with an English Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound mix and a French Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo track. There will also be English subtitles. As always, we’ll post updates as we learn more.
This is shaping up to be an interesting year for MST3K fans!"
Yes, it is indeed. Thoughts?

Wow! I have the old release, but the anamorphic transfer makes this a worthwhile double dip.
I imagine subtitles would be difficult to follow during the theater segments.

I imagine subtitles would be difficult to follow during the theater segments. They weren't actually, since the movie had fewer riffs than the actual TV show. It was easier to read both the riffs, and dialogue from the feature film. I am very excited about this. I just KNEW this film would get a re-release some day. And, hey at least their including the trailer this time. The old DVD release had NOTHING I think. Though it'd be nice for there to be a commentary by Mike, kevin, and Trace.

Would have been nice to see the deleted scenes on it maybe but a proper rerelease is most welcome. Obviously Universal are reacting to all the other riff based projects popularity and getting their finger out.

Well, if this does come true, then... wow. Between Joel and (much of ) the Gang getting back to riff movies, and The Movie being re-released (cross yer fingers), these past twelve months really have been the "Do you believe in miracles!?" year for MiSTies.

Well, this is unexpected. If it's not at a "deluxe" price, I'd definitely like to upgrade my VHS to a widescreen DVD.

ehhhhhhh...i know i'm gonna get nailed for this...but i think it's total horse crap. you can't tell me that they don't have outtakes..comments to be made...extras that would make all the nerdos cream themselves... if they made a sweet deluxe edition...i'd pay a decent chunk more to have a super duper edition loaded w/ bonuses..cause that's the kinda dork i am....and i gladly pay to have my dorkiness satiated....HOWEVER.. just coming out w/ widescreen + trailer is weak....not to mention...what..the 20.00 price tag? reminds me of the endless re-releases of Star Wars...doing it cause they know ppl will buy it...
ehhhhh. i know i'm mad cause i've faced this scenario countless times w/ various other movies that i love....i buy the dvd...only to have them re-release and re-release... i'm STILL mad cause we have to pay the enormous write-up on dvd's in general. how much does it cost to make a dvd? and we pay how many times that amount? same with cd's. ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. whatever. i'm sure i'm being especially hard on MST...but it's only because i think so much more of them than the average hollywood bs movie. i'm done. and totally pissy. sorry.

I got a nice widescreen monitor for Christmas. ANAMORPHIC ROCK ON.
I can get extras elsewhere if I have to. No biggie for me.

Extras would have been nice, but I'm just happy to have a good transfer of the movie that doesn't cost over $100... :-)
Between getting this, and the upcoming "Giant Gila Monster" release, my official DVD release collection will be complete... woohoo!

Mallon says the deleted scenes are destroyed, so this is probably the most complete release we'll get.
