I hate when people say "Source, please?" on message boards. It sounds so snarky.
However, this talk of deleted scenes having been destroyed really bugs me, so...
Source, please?

I have the DVD from when it first came out, but like Josh said anamorphic transfer makes it a very shame-free double dip.
I am curious about the timing of this. Has Universal/BBI noticed the popularity of Rifftrax and CT and they are hoping to cash in? Don't get me wrong, I am not looking a gift horse (well, a $19.99 MSP horse) in the mouth, just curious about the timing.
I cannot believe that Universal would have been so short sided to destroy the deleted scenes, but if they held MST3K is so little regard, I guess I can see them burning "useless crap".
I can see why there are no NEW bonus features since the boys and the bots probably are not getting a dime from this new release.

Well, this is unexpected. If it's not at a "deluxe" price, I'd definitely like to upgrade my VHS to a widescreen DVD. Had I known you didn't have a DVD of this, I would have solved that little issue. ;D

Of course, this DOES mean the end of the $135 copies on e-bay and Amazon.com. More people put out of business!

During the Q&A from the '96 Convention the brains were asked if the deleted scenes might be re-inserted at some point and their reply was negative, but kind of vague, I think. I don't think they said that the scenes didn't exist on film anymore, but something similar. Maybe I'll try to find the spot on the DVD tonight and post it so someone here can explain to me what the hell they meant.

Don't get me wrong, I am not looking a gift horse (well, a $19.99 MSP horse) in the mouth, just curious about the timing. This is my belief. Even if it's not the reason that someone at the studio thought of doing a re-release, it could well have influenced the higher-ups' decision to approve the re-release. It's a numbers business. The chances of something happening are always better anytime a studio wonk can point at some numbers and say, "Look, that's selling, so maybe this similar thing will sell too!" I cannot believe that Universal would have been so short-sighted to destroy the deleted scenes, but if they held MST3K is so little regard, I guess I can see them burning "useless crap". Again, all money issues. Did Universal have to cut back on old inventory to reduce storage space costs? Did they think there was a chance of someone stealing the footage and making a profit through piracy? (Which, in a muddled way, is a loss of profits for Universal.) If so, then maybe the footage was destroyed. Especially if whoever was in charge of approving the list of footage to be destroyed was clueless about MST's cult status, and the fan interest in lost scenes. Or if it was a matter of "We need to free up X square feet of storage space! Anything that's not slated for re-release in the next three years must go." The budgeting strategies of large companies are so complex and illogical, especially to outsiders, that no one can say for sure why a particular item survives or not. I can see why there are no NEW bonus features since the boys and the bots probably are not getting a dime from this new release. If you mean that there are no new features because Universal is not willing to spend an extra dime to get the Brains to contribute new material, then I agree. My opinion is that this re-release is not about recognizing a lost treasure, or about treating a cult favorite with respect. It's all about cashing in on a new trend. Universal's going to get in, get out, and get paid. IMO. YMMV. ING.* * Infallibility Not Guaranteed.

One wonders if this might end up being the only part of MST3K to end up on Blu-Ray/HD-DVD someday when Universal goes looking for a few extra bucks beyond the DVD re-release...
That said, I'm just happy to finally have a shot at the DVD without paying an astronomical price! I have an AVI of the movie and a VHS screener copy, but that's it.

Co-sign, except I don't even have that. The only times I've ever seen the movie on VHS, we rented it from Hollywood Video. But now that HV has gotten rid of their VHS library to make room for more DVDs, I've only been able to watch it online. So even if/though it's a bare-bones release, I'll be picking it up. But I'm a wisher, so I'm still hoping for a proper/deluxe release someday.

I am a totally excited Mystie! I'm gonna wear my planet logo shirt today! (Yeah, I just got the news this morning.)
Maybe we can can have hopes that the strong sales of this re-release will lead to a deluxe edition. Now, I know a lot of people would say, "Flapjacks that, dude! That is so like those money-grubbin', double-dippin' Universal people! Gosh!" But, it's true, it's all a game of sales figures and potential for sales.
What I've always wished is that Criterion would get in on MST3K: The Movie. If the archive footage is indeed lost, do you think that Criterion would accept using the fan video? Maybe, I think. I don't really know if Criterion is "too good" for that kind of thing or if they're more like a "do whatever it takes to preserve this material" type of group.
Anyway, it's an awesome time to be a Mystie!

I found the spot I was looking for at about the 3hr 25mnt mark on the '96 Convention DVD from Skyroniter. During the Q&A a fan asks if the deleted segments will ever be available and Jim Mallon said, "Chances are pretty good they'll never be released; we don't even own them, actually." He then said something like, "that'd be your friends at Universal," but it's hard to hear. Then the important part, "The quality that you see there is, uh, I think these were like VHS outputs of the *Avid(Abot?)* Non-Linear System, so they're not even *out there*." The parts marked w/asterisks were hard to hear because of crowd noise and Jim sort of mumbling. Maybe someone here will have an idea what he meant regarding that Non-Linear System thing.

That just means they were dumped off to VHS. Avid is an editing system. I bet the scenes are hanging around somewhere.

Mallon says the deleted scenes are destroyed, so this is probably the most complete release we'll get. At his comic book store appearance Kevin Murphy told me he thought the deleted scenes still existed, but that may have just been speculation.

Surely a workprint of the movie must have been put together in order to show the movie to the focus group who "didn't get it" which made Universal order the cutting of the deleted stuff. So hopefully this workprint might exist in either someones hands or at Universal. Like with the Superman IV deleted scenes. The original reels were destroyed, but the workprint survived.
I just find it a little hard to believe that the reels will have been destroyed to a feature from 1995.
