At five viewings Infinity War has now officially surpassed Captain America: Civil War as the movie I've seen the most in a theater.
And I still get chills when Cap, Widow, and Falcon appear in Scotland, "BRING ME THANOS!" and "She's not alone."

For me, it's Ebony Maw and Doctor Strange: Ebony Maw: "Does this chattering animal speak for you?" Doctor Strange: "Certainly not, I speak for myself." *smoothly conjures badass shields* I should see this again while I can. Thought it was a great experience. And I haven't seen a movie twice in the theater since, I don't know, The Crow? Before that Return of the Jedi.

That's one of two Dr. Strange moments that sticks with me long after the movie ends, the other is when he mirrors himself fighting Thanos. Can't get enough of that Strange fighting style.
Oh yeah and "Dude, you're embarassing me in front of the wizards."
I also love M'Baku. He's not in very much of the movie, but him leading the Wakandan army with his chant always pumps me up.

Oh yeah and "Dude, you're embarassing me in front of the wizards." The "wizard" remarks from the other characters are pretty darn funny, especially when Thor is calling him that in his slightly confused/bemused way. Stark has another good one with (paraphrasing) - "They came from outer space to steal a necklace from a wizard!" Thanos calls him that, too. It's a funny bit, but come on, he's a Master of the Mystic Arts! A sorcerer. I'm hoping he'll drop that in a response sometime. Though, and maybe I've missed any clarification, he is not the Sorcerer Supreme, even though he seems to be in charge at Kamar-Taj now that the Ancient One is dead (at least in the MCU). Thoughts, Torgo? And yeah, "Bring me Thanos!" and Thor's whole arrival in Wakanda is a hell of a "f*ck yeah" moment.

I think the implication is definitely that Strange is the new Sorcerer Supreme. He may have rushed through the process a bit through one film, but every time we've seen him since he's been pretty head honcho. Plus he mastered the Time Stone, which seems to be a pretty big deal in his world. I think the reference to him as a "wizard" comes from varying places.
In the case of Tony, it's easy to excuse him for using an oversimplification. He's Tony, and that's really the only excuse he needs. He refers to Ebony Maw as "Squidward," so I think Strange got off easy.
Thor on the other hand I think is more of that fish out of water situation, where he is more familiar with his own world and is probably more comfortable with using his own words, often at the expense of looking thick in the head.
And then there's Thanos, who I wouldn't personally put it past him to belittle his opponents. And of course Strange is a recent Sorcerer Supreme, so there may be a skeptical condescension at play.

Plus he mastered the Time Stone, which seems to be a pretty big deal in his world. I think the reference to him as a "wizard" comes from varying places. I think some of my confusion is based on the line from late in the Doctor Strange movie, with Wong talking about "no Sorcerer Supreme to defend it," referring to the Earth and the death of the Ancient One. Strange replies "we'll be ready," but there's a gap there between then and Ragnarok. Just seems like him being named Sorcerer Supreme would have been more of a moment, you know? Either way, he seems very much Sorcerer Supreme in Infinity War in terms of his influence, knowledge and power. You're right - it's definitely implied. It's definitely in Tony's character to call him that. He's a bit like Sawyer from Lost with his nicknames. The bit with him calling Thor "Point Break" in Ragnarok is hilarious. Hemsworth has a great deadpan for those fish out of water moments that has served him very well throughout his MCU run. I still like the first Thor a lot for that aspect. I mean, he calls Coulson "Son of Coul" with sincerity. You gotta love that. Strange is basically belittled by most of the people he comes across at least once, except Parker, who doesn't seem to have a bad word to say about anybody. Maw mocks his powers as "quaint," and that he is probably "popular with the children." Thanos says he's "full of tricks." It's a dismissive tone that is offset by Strange actually being a pretty heavy hitter in this movie. My Doctor Strange obsession aside, it's an awesome flick. I don't keep a list but it's top three for me.

It's perhaps very likely that Strange is working to become the next Sorcerer Supreme and we just don't know how far he is. I agree kt's not very clear.
I imagine Doctor Strange 2 is going to further this idea more and we'll see just where he lies in the world of the mystic arts. Plus I just got to see him and Mordo go at it.

Hell, give me Mordo and Wong in the next Avengers flick. Hamir, too. I just like those damn wizards.

I'm curious about that, but right now the hottest comic book movie news is that James Gunn was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 over tweets he made years before he was even hired by Marvel. Way back when he was known as "That asshole who wrote the Scooby Doo movies."
This is more evidence that Twitter is the most evil of all forms of social media.

Way back when he was known as "That asshole who wrote the Scooby Doo movies." This is more evidence that Twitter is the most evil of all forms of social media. Yeah, that's an ugly situation all around. I've followed Gunn on various platforms since he was on MySpace, and back in those days he thought he was a really funny, clever guy. Much of the time, he was just lame. I didn't find him offensive, just kind of eye-rollingly immature. The tweets in question here fall into that spectrum for me. Yeah, not funny in the slightest. Not sure it's really grounds for dismissal, though. Much of this is political. Gunn is very outspoken about the current administration and he's tangled with its supporters over Twitter on several occasions. Those supporters are the ones that spearheaded the rally against him. Gunn (who had already apologized for those jokes years ago) and his supporters were left in the position of trying to defend jokes about pedophilia and rape. I believe jokes are just jokes, but good luck with that. The campaign worked, and Disney blinked. To be fair, Gunn has mellowed considerably over the years and I've found him to be an interesting/entertaining personality. I would not have fired him, but nobody asked me, either. The Guardians movies are some of the best the MCU has produced. I don't know how they're going to pull off a third movie without him. Bautista has already said he's not happy about the decision. I guess we'll have to see how it plays out.

Pardon my being reminded of an Ant-Man quote, but it feels perfect: "Baskin-Robbins always finds out." Twitter is a social media platform devoted to one's off the cuff thoughts and remarks. I can't understand why so many celebrities use it in the aggressive form they do, because a blow up like this is bound to happen. It happened to Roseanne earlier this year too. I've liked James Gunn most of his career. The most Gunn-iest parts of the Scooby Doo movies are actually pretty flapjacksing hilarious and all the haters can pry my copy of Slither out of my COLD DEAD HANDS. I don't follow him through social media, but while I find the tweets disgusting, I'm not surprised they existed. I'm not entirely saying this because I love the MCU, but firing him over tweets he publicly made and apologized for before he was even hired is slightly scummy as well. If this were a Roseanne situation and he was currenyly making them then it would be a different story. And don't get me started on the way Grace Randolph is spinning this story. She's trying to spark rumors that because he was joking about rape and pedophilia means he's an actual rapist and pedophile. That's just everything that's wrong with the current state of media right there. Normally I think most of the editorials on Flickering Myth are obvious attempts at fanrage clickbait, but I think this editorial sums up my feelings on what is going on: www.flickeringmyth.com/2018/07/james-gunns-old-tweets-were-abhorrent-but-it-makes-little-sense-that-he-was-fired/I'm sorry, but Disney hired a man who made a movie where Ellen Page raped Rainn Wilson and then suddenly decided they don't like the fact that they hired a man who used to make rape jokes when the public suddenly remembered that he made rape jokes. He's already paid for this. Publicly. Why a second time? They just come off as public outcry tools. As for who should helm Guardians 3, I was no big Ragnarok fan but I think Taika Waititi is the natural choice. I doubt he'd do it though. On a happier note, we have a look at DC post Justice League finally and we have trailers for Aquaman and Shazam. I like about 50% of each and am "eh" on the other 50%. I prefer Shazaam because a) I just watched a theatrical screening of Big this week and I'm digging the Big influence, and b) I'm not a huge James Wan fan, so Aquaman isn't quite gelling with me. But that Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer, damn that was aces.

And if I may reignite a discussion Mod City and I were having, I am currently in the process of moving and while I've been packing I've been using Marvel movies as background noise. I've done Age of Ultron (still enjoy it) and Ragnarok (still meh) so far. Tonight I watched Doctor Strange. What a great movie. So much visual flair, good humor, GREAT music (love that score so much), and I will die by my opinion that "Dormammu, I've come to bargain!" is one of the most brilliant and refreshing climaxes I've ever seen in a superhero movie. But I took note at the end that Wong states that there is no Sorcerer Supreme anymore just before the credits roll. Strange is only named the head of the New York Sanctum. So I think I'll take this to mean he isn't the Sorcerer Supreme in Infinity War. Most likely they will save that chapter of the story for a Strange solo movie down the road (unless they pull a Guardians 2 and have Strange 2 take place before Infinity War). Now...to choose the next movie...Black Panther, Avengers, Spider-Man: Homecoming, or...I haven't watched the Iron Man movies in a while...such a hard choice. Or I could put Agents of SHIELD in and hit play all.

They also flip the "city destruction" ending on its head by actually rebuilding all the stuff that gets destroyed. It's a nice touch. I also agree that the score is really underrated. I recognize the main theme instantly now (I'm pretty sure they call back to it when Strange splits into multiples against Thanos, too.) That's how I read it. They might have gotten to it if they decided to get a second Strange movie in before Infinity War, but I can see why they waited. Things would have gotten a little crowded on release dates if they dived right into the sequel. I'm glad they've pretty much confirmed they'll be doing a second Strange movie. It's a pretty rich field of comic book movies you have to choose from. Even if you go outside the MCU. It's a golden age of comic movies, even if they're not all perfect films.

Kevin Smith reminds us all every chance he gets that this is a great time to be alive for superhero nerds. It's hard to debate with him on that. Back in the 90's I was living Batman movie to Batman movie because that's all we would get, and pop in a Chris Reeve Superman movie in the VCR in between. There were exceptions, like The Crow, The Mask, and Ninja Turtles, but it was always a disappointing life knowing there could be a Wonder Woman movie and there could be a Spider-Man movie.
To give you a peek at how desperate I was during this period, Sci-Fi Channel used to air what they called a "Mighty Marvel Marathon" where they aired the old Marvel TV movies from the 70's. I taped every single one of them and watched them REPEATEDLY.
After years of patience I finally got my Spider-Man movie, and after even more years of patience I finally got my Wonder Woman movie. I even got movies of Justice League and the Avengers, which I never thought would happen in a million years (regardless of quality). This year I got to see Black Panther and Wasp on the big screen, and with them I'm not sure if there are any more Marvel characters I think deserve their own feature films (Luke Cage maybe, but he's thriving on Netflix...maybe a good Fantastic Four movie...). There are a few DC characters I still want to see, like Black Canary (Birds of Prey or otherwise), Green Arrow, and Martian Manhunter, and there definitely needs to be a Flash movie (just not Flashpoint...not yet...) and, yes, an Aquaman movie too.
Today we live in a world where DC is getting its own streaming service and Disney will likely put Marvel in its own section on its own. Granted Titans looks like ass, but I am so down with a new season of Young Justice.
Bringing Kevin Smith back up, something he also always reminds us is that we now live in a world where Martin Scorsese is producing a movie about the Joker. Let that sink in.
-------------------------------------------------
Nerd gush over. Back to my moving marathon.
Last night I went with Avengers and decided "f*** it" and went outside of the Marvel rotation and followed it with Justice League. It's a double feature I've wanted to do for a while. I have my problems with The Avengers, but...yeah. One of these movies is clearly better than the other.
I think tonight I'm going with Winter Soldier. Always a fav. The bloody Dark Knight of Marvel movies.
