Karli Fairbanks, Bitter BlueThe CD is downbeat but beautiful folk, country. There's something old fashioned, rootsy in a kind of "Over the Rhine" way. The vocals are gentle, pretty and her lyrics are poems. She was 21 when she made this CD and she's a better songwriter than I was at that age. Hell even after years of trying to perfect my skills, she's miles better than I am at this craft. I'm awed by this young lady, a local who is the best songwriter I've ever met in my travels (and that includes Nashville... though there was that one guy, the one who wrote Arrowhead, he'd give her a run for the money) This would most certainly make my greatest albums list. You can find her at Mysapce or CDBaby if your curious to check it out. (Though sadly, after the failure of that "one thread" I doubt this will happen)

My Gentle Giant trifecta is complete! Alternate less-disturbing cover: The two albums after this, Octopus and In a Glass House, are turning out to be some of my favorites, and together with this one make up what seems to be the three essential albums by the group. More organized than their earliest material, and more distinct than their later stuff. I might check out their other stuff in the future, but I think these are the "must-haves".

Radiohead: Hail to the Thief Thumbs....confused I got Hail To The Theif last week (along with The Bends), and I was similarly confused when I got it. The thing is that beforehand my experience listening to Radiohead albums followed a pattern; listen to it all the way through, have four or five songs that grab me automatically and I listen to them over-and-over, then four or five other songs really grab me after I listen to them a few times. With Hail to the Theif no songs grabbed me at first (except maybe Myxamatosis), but then I listened to it a few more times and I started loving it. It was lacking in those first types of songs but chock full of the second. ...got Small Change by Tom Waits today 'cause I have a bit of a deficiency in early Tom. Awesomeness.

I bought the Robyn Hitchcock one the other day. I've been a fan since the mid-80's, but I'd kind of lost track of his stuff over the past few years. Then a couple weeks ago I managed to snag a copy of his DVD, Sex, Food, Death...And Insects for a dollar at a charity sale here at work, and watching it made me love him all over again. I actually went on iTunes looking to replace some of my older cassettes of his -- Fegmania! or Globe of Frogs or Queen Elvis, but no dice. So I got Ole! Tarantula, and I love it. The title track in particular is wonderful, and his tribute to Arthur Kane (of the New York Dolls) is lovely. The best song on it, though, is "The Authority Box." I've had it stuck in my head for days, especially the part that goes, "F**k me, baby -- I'm a trolley bus." Oh Robyn. And I really liked Submarine Fleet's full-length album, so I picked up this debut EP. It's great, although it's a bit more ponderous than the LP. The title track is the best song by far.

UK-only, 1980s "best of" from Dyke And The Blazers, a funk group from Los Angeles ala Charles Wright and the 103rd St. Watts Band. They're best known for "Funky Broadway" and their association with Mr. Oldies-But-Goodies Art Laboe. The two-parters, originals such as "We've Got More Soul", classic drum-heavy "Let A Woman Be A Woman and Let A Man Be A Man" and clever takes on "It's Your Thing" and "You Are My Sunshine" are satisfying.

I've only listened to it once so far, but I really like it. Time will tell if I end up loving it as much as their first two albums; it's bound not to hang together as well because it's more a collection of b-sides and rarities than a proper album, but I don't see that as having a huge effect on my feelings for it. The best song on it is "Lonesome Organist Rapes Page-Turner," which I first heard on their Live at the Roundhouse DVD. I also rather like "Ultima Esperanza," which thematically reminds me of Morrissey's "November Spawned a Monster." There's also a snazzy, accordion-laced cover of the Psychedelic Furs' "Pretty In Pink."

I bought this a couple weeks ago, but it's been riding around in my car, unopened, waiting for me to decide if I really want it. Eventually I'll pass the return date and have my decision forced on me. I liked the Virgin Suicides soundtrack by the same group, I'm just not sure whether or not I want to pay the price for this one.

Southern rock meets heavy metal. I also have their third album. This is their first. Both are rockin'. \m/

A great album, more laid back with more vocals than the Virgin Suicides one. been a massive favourite of mines for the past ten years now.

Alright, you've convinced me to open it ;D To be honest, it seems like you've agreed with quite a bit of the music I've posted here, so I trust your judgment.
