Anyone watching?
I work nights so I haven't watched much, but I've always been a fan of figure skating, especially the ladies. The combination of grace, beauty and athleticism is amazing to me. I've always enjoyed it from the days of Peggy Flemming to my favorite, Kristi Yamaguchi and beyond.
And this year Kim and Asada are putting on quite a display, some of the best skating I've ever seen. Looking forward to the finals tonight. Hope both do their best.

So I guess that's a no? ;D
Well the final 6 in ladies singles was some of the best, if not the best I've ever seen. Each of these young ladies should be proud as they were stunning. Asada did wonderful, she had two small mistakes but otherwise she was brilliant. But Kim is in a world of her own. Simply perfect. The Canadian received the bronze and that was nice.
Great event. Congrats to them all.

I've been watching. It's the typical chopped up version that is the signature of all the NBC Olympics. I wish ABC would get it back.
Glad to see another Kristi Yamaguchi fan. I also loved Katerina Witt.
What was good about it, unlike the men, there was no doubt about who was the best. Kim Yu-Na is one of the best skaters I've seen since Kristi. She was fantastic. And the women ice skating had what the Olympics is all about, participation. The skater from Turkey Tugba Karademir (yes, I had to look it up ;D) is my favorite story so far.

Oh yeah Witt was amazing as well. I think Kim just put herself with Kristi and Katarina as one of the best ever.

I just can't get into the Winter Olympics, even though every single person I know is really eating it up. To me the sports involved are one of two types: boring or too specialized. It just seems less organic than the summer games. Traditional track and field events at least give the appearance that anyone could conceivably compete in the sports. Footraces. Swimming races. You don't need a ton of fancy equipment to train, at least in many of the most traditional games. Winter sports are expensive and seem kind of elitist to me. Heck, just going on a ski vacation for a week will cost you a fortune. Even a good set of curling stones costs $5,000. Maybe it's just that I'm a terrible, terrible skier But I do still like the spirit of competition in general. I did some women's downhill, which was pretty impressive (especially watching in HD) and so help me, I like watching curling. It looks fun.

My wife, the fanatic sports fan, is watching every night. I haven't watched any of it. I'm from the deep south where it's a historic event when a 1/2 inch of snow accumulates on the ground. I was also never rich enough to participate in skying, luge, snowboarding, bobsledding speed skating or any think of those snow or ice-centric sports. Come to think of it almost all the sports in the winter Olympics are rich kid twee sports with the obvious exception of hockey. So no, I don't watch and have never had any interest in the winter Olympic games.

i just wish i knew why curling is so popular. i don't care to watch the olympics, but every time i am flipping through the channels, there it is. the only thing i can imagine is that it's a sport about anyone can do - if you can sweep or push a heavy round thing on ice - and stand around for hours, speculating on how it should be done, you can be in the olympics.

Wow, I didn't know anyone had that perspective on the winter games. I would assume looking at the athletes as elitist and rich is completely American. In most of Europe, especially in the Northern countries, Canada and some of Asia, people ice skate and ski all the time.
I've always enjoyed the Winter Olympics over the Summer games. Both have competitions I don't like; Winter: aerial skiing and snowboarding aka skateboards on ice, in fact, all the x games type of competitions are bad. Summer: Cycling, fencing, basketball(gag), most of track and field; yet I'm most fascinated by the winter games. Like doctor z, it has to do with where I live (< look to the left...... ;D), but I love it for the very reason he states, it's uniqueness to the area in which I live.
@mod city, I'm addicted to the curling. I never knew ice shuffle board could be so fascinating.
And the US men's hockey team is about to win. 6-1, it looks like. Now we need Canada to win, so the gold medal will at least be in North America.
edit: solgroupie you beat me! I must have been typing for a long time. The fascination for me with the curling is trying to figure out what the next move will be. It's a little like chess, although probably closer to checkers.

I'm not rich and I can't skate and I hate the cold. But that doesn't mean I can't appreciate the beauty and athleticism of figure skating. I don't expect everyone to enjoy the same things but the arguments I'm reading against it? I don't see how one has anything to do with the other. (baffled)

I've been watching alot of the action. Working overnight at the hotel I get to see lots of curling action. I think what they need for curling is to have a keg of beer on each end of the ice sheet, and by the end of the match each team will have to have finished their keg. That would liven things up. And it would probably be a good idea to have the restrooms nearby.

TRUCK FARMER JOHNSON IS RIGHT!!!!!! YES HE IS!!! Can you see it? Shot's in the wrong lane, uncontrollable laughter because of a 'noise' someone made, a misunderstanding between teams that leads to a brawl....we can dream... Well, actually, the women finals had a great game. Canada 2 up and one shot left in the 10th end. All they had to do was cover correctly but, no! They miss their shot, Sweden scores 2 points and then end up winning it in the 11th end. Curling really can be exciting.
